I’m not offended. Just offering a different opinion and some facts that I think support that opinion.

Coyle's miscalculations as I see them

Sure, it’s a difference and I said I agree Musselman’s is stronger. But they aren’t drastically different. The NCAA tournament is a very small part of the season.

Coyle's miscalculations as I see them

Maybe I missed some posts, but I don’t know of anyone saying those coaches are all equal. Medved’s resume is much weaker than all of them including Smith. Kruger is just in a totally different category having been a college head coach for 35+ years and at 4 different Power 6 schools. Smith...

Coyle's miscalculations as I see them

He’s indisputably a better hire on paper. Based on what Johnson is getting paid I’m not sure it’s safe to say Smith would have been drastically more expensive. Haven’t seen the buyout figures, but based on the salary numbers I’m doubting there isn’t a pretty standard buyout in Johnson’s...

    GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

Surprised Coyle went with this big of a risk. Guessing $$ played a big role.

Well put. I think it’s very possible that the “interview” was really more due diligence than an actual interview. Jacobson has been a D1 coach for 15 years, and has likely crossed paths with many of our potential candidates as well. Could have been more of a “tell me what you know about this...

Maybe Jacobsen was that “mystery” candidate. My guess is the interview without name mentioned is Gates. So it’s Smith, Gates, and Jacobsen.

All Things 2021 NCAA College Basketball March Madness Tournament Thread

In the pro leagues the playoffs are more designed to end with the best team as the champion. The NCAA tournament kind of does that, but with single elimination you are going to have more upsets and a much lower likelihood of ending with the best team.

Winning more will heal most of it. Nebraska is one of the few B1G jobs that’s indisputably tougher than ours. They’ve made the NCAA tournament one time this millennium. We’ve made it six times in that same time frame. I’m not saying he’s my guy (cause he’s not, he’d be pretty far down the...

He wouldn’t be anywhere near the top of my list, but I’d hire him over some of the names mentioned here.

The whole idea of hiring any coach to get their assistant just seems crazy to me. 1) Coaches want to pick their own staff. And for good reason. 2) if an assistant is really good then the chances of them leaving for a head coaching job are pretty high. So the assistant leaves after a year or two...

If any coach wins 35% of their conference games in the first two years they will have that problem. Based on Smith’s past it’s very unlikely for that to be the case. Any coach is a risk, but Smith is probably the lowest risk of the realistic choices.

The difference to an AD is that if you make an unconventional hire you are going to get more criticism if it doesn’t work, especially in football or men’s basketball. Obviously any hire that doesn’t work will result in criticism, but it’s magnified if you are going out on a limb. For example, PJ...

Does he have much appeal period? He’s been a D1 head coach for 8 seasons. In those 8 seasons he has zero NCAA berths and 2 wins over Power 6 teams. Are there any other Power 6 programs that would have him on their short list? I’m not convinced he’s on ours.

That’s how things go in my bracket. Biggest question for me was Illinois vs OK State
