All Things 2022 Minnesota High School Football Thread

Rosemount is very good. And they were helped by LS's coaches. Carsen Hansen is the best player on either team and he only carried the ball 13 times.

All Things 2022 Minnesota High School Football Thread

I have been led to believe by what I think are credible sources that St. Thomas Academy is getting a lot of kids who might have gone to Cretin in the past (one of their two star running backs was actually at Cretin as a freshman). And some of those records for private schools are a bit illusory...

All Things 2022 Minnesota High School Football Thread

You can see from hockey (looking directly at you, Hermantown) that the self-selection model is far from perfect. And sometimes it's understandable - St. Thomas Academy will play one competitive game at 5A this year, against Mahtomedi, before the state tournament, but on a year-to-year basis...

All Things 2022 Minnesota High School Football Thread

I think it's important to remember that those of us more interested in sports may have a different perspective on the size of the suburban schools than others. A friend of mine had kids attend Wayzata schools who were not into athletics, but were more artsy/bookish; her view was that a school...

The All-time University of Minnesota NFL Team

The rest look good but the OL needs quite a bit of rethinking. Fahnhorst was definitely overlooked. At the other tackle, John Williams started for the Super Bowl champion Colts in 1970 and had a 12-year career. Greg Larson started 153 games at center for N.Y. Giants from 61-73.

    Local Recruiting

I believe Love Adebayo is a junior, and he is the real deal. I have never seen a HS back who was harder to tackle. STA's sophomore RB, Savion Hart, is also really good.

    Bielema Out Vs Iowa

Joking aside, COVID is not something Bielema wants to be dealing with in his current physical condition. Obesity is a huge risk factor.

Souhan on Fleck: If he can't win big this year is the future as bright as his new $35 million contract would suggest?

As I noted, the argument that Fisch hurt Weber's career is probably valid. The problem is that the snarky reference to Fisch's record this year as dispositive of him being a bad coach (which he may well be) when the situation is more complex than that.

Souhan on Fleck: If he can't win big this year is the future as bright as his new $35 million contract would suggest?

This is a little thing, but it symbolizes why you wish they could do better than Souhan: the poke at Jedd Fisch's record this season. Yes, he's an easy target, and yes, he's a vagabond who seems to keep failing upward, and yes, he's probably making a valid point about Adam Weber's career. But...

Minnesota High School Football Section Championship Matchups

If anyone fits that description I could not have less sympathy for them as it's pretty hard, not to mention pretty stupid, to buy a house and not know what school district it's in. The Hopkins school district had a very good reputation for a very long time - going back to 1950 when my mom...

Minnesota High School Football Section Championship Matchups

Not to defend everything the MSHSL has done here (or elsewhere), but they really do face an uphill battle due to the huge disparity in levels even among classes. The top dozen 6A teams are essentially playing a different game than schools like Hopkins, Eagan, and Coon Rapids. The same thing...

Minnesota High School Football Section Championship Matchups

Hopkins, I believe, has fairly large numbers of students coming in from the east, and leaving to go to schools further west or private schools, through open enrollment and other programs, so its student population is more transitory than most, making it harder to have the same kids involved in...

Minnesota High School Football Section Championship Matchups

I think they had pre-set matchups between sections, and Mankato West is in Section 2. West gets St Thomas Academy this week, which may be their biggest test. And as someone whose kids go to Two Rivers (former Sibley), I couldn't be cheering any harder for West to trounce STA.

Minnesota High School Football Section Championship Matchups

If you're going to put everyone in the playoffs you face the issue of first-round games that are ridiculously uncompetitive, particularly in 8-team sections. Hopkins, the worst team in 6A, lost 50-0 to Lakeville South in the last regular season game, and was rewarded by having to play them...

    6-1, 1-8, 8-1, 7-2, 5-4, 6-2

Fitzgerald turned down a chance to interview for the Packers job a few years back. According to Stewart Mandel it's widely believed that the Bears head coaching job is the one job Fitzgerald, who grew up in that area, would be interested in.

Mike Farrell: Minnesota's Mount Rushmore since 1980: Greg Eslinger, Tyrone Carter, Darrell Thompson, Tyler Johnson

Minor quibble with the original article's comment on Darrell Thompson (whose inclusion on list I agree with): he was not the only source of offense his first two years, as Rickey Foggie was still around. The threat of Foggie keeping it on the option certainly helped Thompson, who averaged 5.7...

Get this guy a helmet and some pads

This was probably always just amusing idle speculation, and appears to definitely be that now, but Lesnar isn't the only comparison point. Steven Neal was a two-time NCAA heavyweight champ and never played college football; he signed a free agent contract with the Patriots and was a five-year...

Ranking Golden Gopher Football Seasons, 1970-2019

This might underrate 1973 - the four losses were to teams that finished the year ranked 2 (OSU), 6 (Mich), 7 (Neb), and 18 (Kansas). Minnesota was clearly the third-best team in the conference in what might have been the height of the Big 2/Little 8 era; give them a softer nonconference...

    Purdue coach says...

The number of people in that situation you should feel sorry for is exactly zero. Prominently displayed on every real estate listing is what school district the property is located in. If you don't know what school district you're buying a house in it's your own damn fault. As to the oddities...

Reusse: Fleck realizes you can fool most of the people some of the time, and Gophers fans nearly all of the time

It was never in print. It was an extra, online-only blog entry of the kind he writes occasionally, and it's still there: http://www.startribune.com/vikings-need-help-fleck-sound-bite-genius-twins-budget-buster/565734192/ (subscription required).
