Lou Holtz at Minnesota - 1984-1985

To be fair to Wacker, he expressly looked into it at TCU, told his AD and everyone else it had to stop, and was told all payoffs were over, but boosters kept doing it behind his back. He had flaws as a coach but as a person he was of much higher character than most college coaches.

And they may have wanted to do it in a more low-key situation - probably isn't the same pressure at Holy Family compared to St. Thomas. Although I am a bit curious about the situation at STA. My kids attend a neighboring high school, and even before the O'Brien news there were fairly credible...

    ATHAN

The thing that sticks out to me most is just how strong an arm he has. Morgan was a very good college QB, and Kaliakmanis can make throws Morgan could never dream of making. Arm strength is of course not everything but if his game sense and other things progress the right way that arm may give...

Maple Grove's QB doesn't have the classic super strong arm so I see how big schools might not be after him but he seems to do everything else very, very well - I was quite impressed. Would have liked to see Rosemount handle things a bit better at the end but it's not the first or last time that...

The data I can find seem to indicate that Simley's enrollment (unadjusted for free/reduced lunch) is between 1100 and 1200, which puts them squarely in 4A for football. Much of the new development going in south and east of the Vikings complex is in the Eagan district so Simley may not be...

It's a tough line to draw. At some point even if he's a better player going both ways inevitably wears down a kid and their performance suffers. There were times I wondered how a few of the kids on my son's 5A team who were basically playing the whole game (one played both DE and OT at around...

Even at 6A when you have more kids sometimes you just have to get as much as you can out of your best guys. Superior athletic ability sometimes carries the day.

***OFFICIAL IOWA AT MINNESOTA BATTLE FOR FLOYD OF ROSEDALE IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Tim Brando appears to be stuck in 1982. Potential concussions, which he thought it was, are no longer referred to as getting "dinged". And pretty clearly it was a knee injury that may be serious.

That is a good point - if you scan the results in the Friday paper wholly uncompetitive games are pretty common at all levels, unfortunately. I would still have to think some kids who have big-time dreams won't at least consider whether constantly winning blowouts in which they're not tested...

The thing I wonder is if this might eventually make some kids think twice about going there if that's the football experience you get in terms of game action. While the culture there is not necessarily my cup of tea STA is a very good school and there are plenty of other good reasons to go...

Yeah, as much as they make it hard to like them I do have to admit they're in a tough position. Throw in the fact that, um, their development program is a bit different than that of a public school where all the kids came up through the same youth association (I'll stop here . . .), so that...

Pretty much the last thing I want to do is take the side of a team that runs a trick play up 35-0 in the section final and then celebrates like they won the Super Bowl when they initially though it worked (refs ultimately ruled it an incompletion) . . . but I will admit that St. Thomas is in a...

St Thomas loses to Mahtomedi, something I did not see coming. Perhaps only playing one game that was competitive all year - first Mahtomedi game - wasn't exactly the best way for St Thomas to prepare for close games in playoffs.

If you happen to see a St. Thomas game, prepare to be impressed by Savion Hart. Best high school running back I have ever seen in person. There are rumors that he's going to leave for IMG Academy or someplace like that for his senior year, which quite frankly makes sense if they are going to...

The ride will end Friday, unfortunately, but Two Rivers is somehow doing this with one of their two best players (6'4", 250 lb junior DE) out injured, and with their regular QB out with a concussion. Starting safety added QB duties for Hastings game after not having taken an offensive snap all...

St. Thomas is the big one. 33 of their last 58 games they have won by 24+ plus. Only one game this year was competitive and they won that one by 14. At some point they're doing a disservice to their own high-end kids with DI aspirations by having them play inferior competition week after week.

The injury thing would potentially explain how Shakopee surprisingly lost last night to Eagan (which has made a very nice turnaround and won 5 games this year after strugging for quite a few years).

Geographic sections are a necessity in 5A, I suppose, but the disparity between sections is remarkable. Three teams from last week's 5A Top Ten (Chanhassen, Waconia, and Mankato West), plus Chaska, which just beat Armstrong, are in the same section. Meanwhile, St. Thomas's toughest section...
