Do MN really suck that bad?

If there are 50 state flagships, and you are ranked #23.... You're just above mediocre. I don't agree that "we suck." It's just that we're not Michigan or Berkeley or UCLA or UVA or UNC or Texas. We could be. But we don't have the institutional mandate of being elite. Which is a pity.

Don't be surprised if the SEC and Big Ten go pro in the future...

Before you eliminate the 4-year eligibility limits, you secretly encourage the athletes to establish a players union. Then you negotiate salary caps with the union, so you're within the antitrust laws. THEN you eliminate the eligibility caps. I agree with 100% of what you've said.

Do MN really suck that bad?

Well... I think Minnesota is not what it could be. As a whole, it is a just-above-mediocre flagship public school that is situated in a somewhat high end metropolis. But we've not turned into the sort of top-notch place we could be. We're not Berkeley or Michigan or UCLA or UVA or Texas or...

Athlon Sports reports Clemson, Florida State, Oregon, and Washington

I would prefer UF and Georgia Tech. State schools, very top end. And UF produces a good football team more often than it doesn't. They'd delivery TV sets in Florida/Atlanta. Makes a ton of sense.

247: College football's 10 teams set to rise, tumble in 2023 (Set to tumble: Minnesota)

I'm optimistic about the "parts" that will constitute the new Gopher "machine." I think that, end-to-end, they have higher top-end capability. That said, I sort of suspect that this year will be a year of watching the parts come together to form a smoothly operating machine. Next year is the...

Gophers 2023 rushing yard leader will be...

Evans. As for Taylor, playing time at the RB position is not determined by what you can do with the ball in your hands. It's determined by what you do when the ball is not in your hands. That takes about a year in the system. I doubt he sees much playing time this year.

So I did a little work today (Mo vs Sean Tyler...)

It's not every time. Off the top of my head, I saw those loss figures come up several times. I didn't think to track the actual yards lost. From watching their game against Michigan State, I could see that he lost a big chunk of yards by retreating to loop around a DE in order to get to the...

So I did a little work today (Mo vs Sean Tyler...)

Since you asked, I went to ESPN and went through each game, clicking on the play-by-play option and manually pulled out the runs for each player, putting them into a spreadsheet. ...Of course I did it on company time! :-)

So I did a little work today (Mo vs Sean Tyler...)

I think Evans is too talented to keep off the field. He sees reasonable/significant playing time this year.

So I did a little work today (Mo vs Sean Tyler...)

Well, it's never the case that all things are equal. So there's undoubtedly distortion. If I were to offer interpretation, it would go like this: (1) If, in the context of a given play, there's just "nothing there," then for Tyler, there's nothing there. Mo gets you 2-3 yards. (2) Tyler...

So I did a little work today (Mo vs Sean Tyler...)

This is a histogram of Mo's carries (maroon) vs Sean Tyler's carries (blue) based on the regular season of last year. Since Mo had 1.5x the quantity of carries (209 vs 320), I multiplied Sean's carries in each category by 1.5 in order to control for volume. Some takeaways: -They are equally...

Big Ten All-Transfer Portal Team for 2023 (Sean Tyler, Corey Crooms, Elijah Spencer, Jack Henderson)

Not commenting on whether Tyler is "good" or not. I am referring to things like this. He's sent on a sweep, and the DE has the end sealed. Now he could cut up, and get 2 yards and then maybe another 2 yards after contact. Or he could take and evasive move, looping 5 yards deep into the...

Big Ten All-Transfer Portal Team for 2023 (Sean Tyler, Corey Crooms, Elijah Spencer, Jack Henderson)

With regard to Tyler, I am a little cautious on that front. Watching some of his games, while it is clear he has high-level home run capability that Mo lacked, he has a flaw that most such RBs possess: he loses a ton of yards seeking the home run. Meaning your drive goes off schedule. Meaning...
