How The Gopher's will upset Oregon

Have a little perspective here. We've had exactly one 40 point loss in Fleck's tenure (that was to national champion Michigan two years ago). We also had a 39 point loss in Fleck's first season. I believe Oregon likely will have a lopsided victory but not by that much.

What grade would you give the coaches in the loss at Cal?

I agree we helped them win. We might be bigger, maybe stronger, but we sure didn't look faster.

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT CAL BATTLE OF THE “GOLDENS” GOLD-OUT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Thank God for him in this game. They haven't all been such easy catches either.

Agreed. Our coaches waste too many downs and that puts a lot of pressure on QBs to get it right whenever they do throw.

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT CAL BATTLE OF THE “GOLDENS” GOLD-OUT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Somebody brought up last year's UCLA game as a reason for not worrying too much because we were behind 10-0 at half in that one. To be behind by only 3 after how badly we played early in the game is somewhat of a relief. Cal seems better than UCLA last year but UCLA outgained us significantly...

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT CAL BATTLE OF THE “GOLDENS” GOLD-OUT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I was thinking that last season's game at UCLA was the same start time but I looked it up and it started and hour and a half earlier. This one will go until at least 12:30 maybe 1:00 AM.

Darius Taylor = Doubtful against Cal.

Next weekend is our first break of the season so the Rutgers game will be three weeks after the injury against NW State. That might be enough time.

Gophers Open -2.5 vs Cal Bears

In general, I agree and share your enthusiasm for the team defense so far. The one thing I'm a bit concerned about is this is the first time this team will face a more prolific and capable passing team. The first two teams didn't pass much and weren't so great when they did.

David Cobb (cbssports.com) is an elite football mind

Yeah, I was looking at some of the comments on an Iowa board after the game. A couple of people said that they needed two turnovers but only got one.

    Ben Johnson is a Disaster

Why? Is he gambling away his severance money?
  11. T

Evidently he’s way more of a big deal than we want to admit.

Well, he was almost always a supporting actor but he's considered one of the most authentic and venerable cowboy actors of all time. He played some other kinds of roles too like the one he won a supporting actor Oscar for in The Last Picture Show in the early 70s.

Evidently he’s way more of a big deal than we want to admit.

Why? Because he has a commonplace name and was one of the hints in a trivia question about another coach? Actually, another Ben Johnson would have been a better clue since he was better known, an Oscar winner, and more popular and respected. He's shown below standing next to the Duke.

    GH: Big Ten Power Rankings

Good point! Nebraska was ranked higher than us by most non-Gopher fans to start the season. There were some reasonable arguments for doing that and they haven't done anything to merit dropping behind us yet so I would keep them ahead as well. I'm not one of those who assumes that we will...

Gophers Open -2.5 vs Cal Bears

Wow! Looks like OSU had 2 turnovers, 10 penalties, and Fresno had 163 yards returning kicks to OSU's 70.

Gophers Open -2.5 vs Cal Bears

Agreed. This year's defense might be better than last year's defense and, if true, that's saying something. With the exception of the 2019 team, Fleck's successful teams all have had the same identity: a great defense coupled with a methodical offense that normally can be counted on to score...

Gophers Open -2.5 vs Cal Bears

Yes, but Oregon State also lost by 9 at home to Fresno State after that game. Fresno State lost to Kansas by 31-7 prior to that game.

    Max Shikenjanski appreciation thread

Yep, really glad to see him play and impressed with his poise and competence in his first QB real QB action. He looked comfortable out there, like he was playing with House money.

    Max Shikenjanski appreciation thread

When his father played and that team made the tournament run, I was living and working in Illinois. That was long before I ever came to Minnesota. We had an office pool, discussed the games, and some of the guys were enjoying that name. "It's not Chickenjanski, it's Shikenjanski!"
