$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

My (worthless) diagnosis is that this was screwed up years and years ago, when they decided to have Gopher football leave campus and play in the Metrodome. We're still a decade+ out from the 2nd generation of fans who (I mean the kids of the kids) who came back on campus and actually grew up...

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

People doing those things were never going to buy tickets to the Vikings or Gophers football. And yes they have those things in Omaha and DM too. Those are not tiny towns.

Which team did media pick to win the conference in the 15th annual cleveland.com Preseason Big Ten Football Poll? (11. Minnesota)

They dominated the 3rd quarter 21-7, overall score was 31-21 at end of 3rd. Mo got hurt on the 2nd to last play of the 3rd quarter. https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/401282789/ohio-state-minnesota

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

In the fall. What else? Twins goes into early fall. They're terrible OK the Loons. Regular season extends into the mid-fall, sure. So you're saying we're losing college football fans ... to pro soccer? With a 20k stadium and plenty of season ticket holders already?

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

Bold: have seen this excuse often, and can't figure out how it's supposed to hold water. In the fall ..... what are these other choices you speak of?? The Vikings. That's it for major football. And going to those games is $$$$$$. And a good number of those folks wouldn't be Gophers even if...

How the Big Ten rallied around a CFP plan the rest of college football isn’t sold on

Probably because, behind closed doors in meetings between TV partners and Big Ten leadership you're exactly correct, but they can't come out and say that. So instead, the public narrative will be trying to shame/drive the SEC into playing an equal number of conference games.

How the Big Ten rallied around a CFP plan the rest of college football isn’t sold on

"Based on end-of-season CFP rankings over the system’s 11-year history," These types of analysis are folly, because surely the committees would have voted differently than they did. Both because the Big Ten and SEC have more teams, and because they would know the number of teams and format was...

2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

I'm only talking about regular season scheduling, nothing more. Whether it be "voluntary" or official, doesn't matter. Stick those nine in a district, conference, or whatever and have them play each other only during the regular season. No one else. I guess probably need 10 so that someone isn't...

2025 Minnesota High School Football Thread

The 9 most "mega" programs should be required to play nobody but themselves. Problem solved! :) But in some seriousness, why shouldn't it be let's say PL, Shak, EP, Edina, Tonka, Wayzata, MG, and ... two more? Lakevilles? Very few if any other schools in the state match those in the...

    Conference Realignment Updates

Thoughts on this wild idea? This won't get done for 2026 I doubt, but maybe the next gen after that? Big Ten and SEC each go to 24. This allows them to each split into say 4 divisions of 6 then hold a 4 team (2 weeks) conference playoff at the end of the year. Or maybe even a 6 team or 8 team...

Same leg/area as the one he strained last year? Time and wear catch up to even the best. Last year's strain was the first major injury he's had like that?

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

That's obviously the other thing we can do, is try to save money as opposed to generate new revenue. For example, cutting baseball.

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

Agree 100% that will always be a thorn in our side, but we still have to figure out a way to make up the difference somehow (not saying that you were claiming we didn't have to try, or anything like that)

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

Bold has to explain it. Guessing Minnesota (and most schools?) are putting at least 90% of the check that comes from the Big Ten into "Football revenue". Which isn't wrong by any means ... it's money that mostly comes from the conference TV deal (mostly football), CFP TV deal, and bowl games...

$200: the final straw for this Gopher alum & lifelong fan

PaaS podcast was talking about this. Burns saying we lag behind our Big Ten peers in athletic department revenue outside of the TV money that every school gets from the conference. Yeah, that conf (TV) money is going up ... but it's already spent, they were saying (Coyle was saying). They have...

    Conference Realignment Updates

Bold: if they had a choice to be in or out, then I agree with you. Every current ACC and Big XII would choose to be in, and probably some more outside those two confs (teams from AAC and new PAC in particular). I don't know if the number is 48, 60, 80 or what. But overall yes I agree I think...

    Conference Realignment Updates

Rest of the sport can stay the same, or even return to smaller regional conferences. There is only minor TV money to be had in regular season games/matches for the rest of the sports, mainly in basketball ... but that still is a drop in the bucket compared to football. There is money to be had...

    Conference Realignment Updates

At what point do the Big Ten and SEC announce some kind of new joint conference just for football? Take the 18+16 now (34) and add X more to get to some number that makes sense. Do divisions/conferences like the NFL has, one conference each based around the Big Ten and SEC. Conf championship...
