Scoggins: Word is Mark Coyle wants to build Gophers men’s basketball. What does it mean for Ben Johnson?

The Mariucci naming rights were part of 3M's overall investment in Gopher athletics, which included the Athlete's Village and other assets. So the naming rights were less than the $800,000 annual value, likely closer to $600,000. That was also 8 years ago and Williams Arena hosts both the men's...

Neal: Moving forward with Ben Johnson is the only option for Gophers men’s basketball

Regardless of whether the new coach brings a star (however one would interpret that), it's a massive advantage to bring in several players that understand and embrace the system. This was a huge problem in Ben's first season. Under different rules, Pitino brought Malik Smith from FIU and DeAndre...

Neal: Moving forward with Ben Johnson is the only option for Gophers men’s basketball

This comment perfectly summarizes why Ben needs to go. The head coach has to be a capable NIL fundraiser, and clearly he's fallen short of that. There's been plenty of in-season improvement the last two years, but the job is much, much bigger than that, and it includes taking responsibility for...

    Six Gophers headed to combine

Same for me. On one hand, 7-5 plus a bowl win is a great year compared to national expectations. On the other hand, the benefit of hindsight suggests the overall talent level was significantly higher than most thought in August. North Carolina will always be the one that got away, and the...

    New House Settlement Option

Presumably that attorney is using legitimacy as a stand-in for maintaining amateurism and avoiding an employer/employee relationship rather than what the word actually means.

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

Sportico acquired the MOU template the B1G is encouraging member schools to use: https://www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2025/big-ten-athlete-revenue-sharing-agreement-1234824623/ Do we have any confirmation whether or not Minnesota is using this MOU template? In reading the article...

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

I can't speak for others, but I'd be frustrated that the collective and coaching staff were unable to retain him either due to finances, playing time, or the competitiveness of the team. But I wouldn't want the school to force him to stay if he didn't want to be at the University of Minnesota...

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

Based on Fleck's track record as a coach, what evidence is there to support the idea he would prevent a player from entering the portal? If this actually ends up in court, and Wisconsin were to "win", schools like Minnesota will not be the greatest beneficiary, the helmet schools will be.

Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

While you are correct that specific NIL dollars are opaque, the reality around Miami's program specifically is that they have landed big fish on the open market. Cam Ward was the best transfer QB available last year and Miami landed him in the portal because they had the finances to do it...

Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

They really ought to prevent Hetherman from putting his name in the portal. That’s how this works, right?

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

If you’re rooting for the University of Wisconsin as an institution over 18-22 year old kids… I know a cop when I see one.

Ryerse Enrolling now for Spring Football and Baseball

Gonna be great when Ligashesky unveils a revolutionary two punter formation. Ferentz is gonna turn green with jealousy.

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

I think that's just a 247 editorial decision. Lucas has engaged legal counsel - Darren Heitner - who has had this to say over the last few days: Hard to see this resolving without either Wisconsin capitulating or it going to court.

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

And whatever their contractual enforcement mechanism is, historically (short history!) the school is not allowed to be involved as seems to be the case at the moment. Side note: a court case would likely mean the collective's contract language becomes public.

    Wisconsin Badgers are idiots

This is precisely my question. Morality/ethics aside, the player has a contract with the collective and a scholarship from the university. The latter is governed by the NCAA and the rules around player mobility have seemed pretty clear. Whatever agreement the player has with the collective...

What’s needed make a step up?

The next step is on offense. In looking at the last five full seasons, we have one elite offense, one poor offense, and three mediocre offenses (including this year). It is encouraging that we were mediocre this year without the usual run game. If the coaching staff can get the line back to...

What grade would you give the Gophers 2024 football season?

I think the offseason work that occurred before the bowl game was played is worthy of a half grade increase. The portal and NIL have gone from boogeymen that some thought threatened the program to a probable strength. There will be departures in the spring, but I'm less concerned than ever about...

What grade would you give the Gophers 2024 football season?

Won a trophy game, won at Illinois, won the bowl game, and finished above .500 in one of the two best conferences in the country. The team was a few plays away from a special season, and I understand why some find that frustrating, but I find it encouraging. Solid B.

Mayo announcers may have been worst ever

Like many others, I thought the broadcast was fun. I happened to have watched the Mayo Bowl last year and - while I couldn't tell you what teams played in it - I remembered the various announcing antics. I was excited the Gophers were in the Mayo Bowl *because* of the broadcast. Creating reasons...
