    Fire Ben Johnson

That's always the danger with quirky coaches. Brewster would have quite the following and the "keep your chili hot" tshirts would be worn all over the stadium if he had been good. (I didn't like the Brewster hire because of his lack of experience, really didn't like his results, but I actually...

    Other Bowl Games Thread

+1 The way officials avoid deciding the game is by making the correct call, not trying implement some weird value code for when some calls should or shouldn't be made.

The Gophers would DOMINATE the SEC

Yes it is. I like the way PWR uses RPi. I've always thought one of the elegant things about sports was that when you took the field, all that mattered was whether you won the game or not. Not whether you passed Kirk Herbsteit's eye test or impressed some spreadsheet.

The Gophers would DOMINATE the SEC

My problem with that system is it still includes human polls. I want (a) no human votes and (b) no margin of victory component. Only thing that should matter is whether you win or lose, not how dominant you look (either to humans or models).

U of M basketball scheduling (Men & Women)

It sounds like he's a good AD as long as he never needs to speak in public, hire a basketball coach, or navigate any changes in college sports.

What is an acceptable expectation for a Gopher Men’s Basketball Head Coach?

Intellectually, i know that's the right answer. But then I log in and can't help myself.

What is an acceptable expectation for a Gopher Men’s Basketball Head Coach?

So the argument is that if we had preserved last year's roster in a way that no one in the country seems to be doing in the current environment, then keeping the key pieces from a team that went all the way to the NIT second round would have somehow made us a very good team this year?

    SEC armor - hypothetical results

I prefer giving the top four spots to different conferences. One of the inherent problems in setting a playoff field for college football is the small amount of data points to compare the strength of teams across conferences. If the CFP thinks the top two teams came from the same conference, it...

All four playoff winners were on home field

I'd only want that if it were to accommodate more conference champ autobids. We don't need two more at large bids, the bubble for that is already soft enough.

    SEC armor - hypothetical results

The original post gets to a lot of my frustration with how college football (and more and more now basketball) handles selection. I hate the focus on predictive models. The point of sports is to earn it by actually winning games, not to produce stats that make a spreadsheet think you will win...

All four playoff winners were on home field

Home field advantage in the first round is a feature, not a bug.

Wow! ESPN...I mean ABC taking every opportunity to tell us the B1G is over-rated.

Everybody getting a trophy is Scott Frost's UCF team claiming a national championship (and i can't actually blame them, they never lost, and in any rational sports structure, to not be a champion, you gave to get beat by someone). In the new system, instead of a trophy, UCF would have gotten a...

Wow! ESPN...I mean ABC taking every opportunity to tell us the B1G is over-rated.

How much did Florida States full regular season (plus conference championship) matter last year?

Wow! ESPN...I mean ABC taking every opportunity to tell us the B1G is over-rated.

I don't think the 2011 Giants feel like less than true champions even though they made the playoffs by going 9-7 against a weak division and then running the table in the playoffs. If you take advantage of the regular season schedule you have , then win your way to the title in the CFP, in my...

Shooter: And word in coaching circles is that Tom Crean would love to have the Minnesota job.

Is his main talking point at the opening press conference going to be where Indiana was at when he took over?

With you on the latter. Additionally, I cheer for the Zags.

Greder: If #Gophers don't bounce back, Mark Coyle will have hard questions to answer on future with Ben Johnson.

Coyle should have to answer hard questions about why he hired Ben Johnson. And why he brought him back after two historically bad seasons. And why we brought him back for a fourth season with a career 25% winning percentage.

Shama: If there is a change in Golden Gophers basketball head coaches after this season, St. Thomas’ John Tauer should be a level one candidate.

I would understand the focus on "local ties" a lot more at the emotional level if we were talking about someone who was a part of some glory years that we had. For example, I thought it was a risky pick to take Whalen who had no head coaching experience, and I wouldn't have done that (despite...
