Is it fair that Notre Dame is independent?

How much would Purdue make if OSU, Michigan, Penn State, USC ditch the conference? How much would OSU, Michigan, Penn State, and USC make if congress took action on media conglomerate business practices?

Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

It’s probably never a good thing the coaching carousel occurs in the dead of winter. Who wouldn’t want to go to Miami for a couple years 🤷‍♂️ Oh well. On to the next.

They didn’t look great. They’ve looked sorta great in the playoff. And that’s good enough.

I see conventional wisdom has the Domers as a 9.5 pt dog. That seems a little optimistic given their struggles to move the ball versus Texas, who had really struggled to stop Arizona State. Riley’s elite mobility will be a wildcard, and Father Dowd will need to bless the receiver’s hands...

I didn’t think Georgia looked great either. Performing better than or squeaking by another team, and looking like a historically great team are two different things. I can’t quantify it but we’re seeing more parity, less juggernaut this year. That’s why I give the Irish a fighting chance.

Is it fair that Notre Dame is independent?

I’m sure top teams have considered the dollars and sense of leaving and might well do that in some cases except for conference contracts. They could probably throw their weight around even more if they wanted to.

Which of the two games seems more fluky in hindsight? OSU didn’t look great pretty much all year but are ripping up the playoff field, when the chips are down. I think that’s part of the essence of sports, at least if not moreso than the wins and losses of a short regular season. They played...

ESPN: Effort to unionize college athletes hits stumbling block

IIRC the union formation was at least partially a ploy to help the league/owners avoid antitrust scrutiny. It probably benefits owners at least as much if not moreso than players. The individual players have enormous negotiating power. In the real world, maybe not as much.

Pompous elitism is a human condition, but maybe worse in God’s waiting room.

ESPN: Effort to unionize college athletes hits stumbling block

My understanding is: Teams can only offer rookie wage scale to draftees, thus being out of the union would be fruitless. Players have to make up union dues and fees even if they opt out, or be suspended without pay. A few players have opted out to do their own licensing deals. Not sure of...

ESPN: Effort to unionize college athletes hits stumbling block

The unions can make their own rules, for the most part, to avoid egregiously stupid policies. The question is who influenced/compromised leadership is. Not too different that politics writ large.

ESPN: Effort to unionize college athletes hits stumbling block

This is one of those issues people aren’t sure about until they check in with their political team. For reasons we can speculate about Cruz seems dead-set against any form of special status carve out for revenue players to form a bargaining unit, but supports granting NCAA antitrust exemption...

Yep, tyranny of the majority. The NFLPA kneecapped draftee’s negotiating power.

    4 vs 12 Teams

The playoff is an extension of the regular season, giving us valuable and necessary extra data points to help determine who the best teams are. It’s not perfect either. More games are better than fewer games. The performance of eg MLB players and teams is more predictable by the end of the...

This ^ The Ohio State redemption arc is also pretty cool when most of us (including me) had left them for dead. Not unlike the 2024 Gophers. Teams that improve over the season shouldn’t be left out of the championship race.
