RandBall: Where’s the money? Gophers budget shortfall raises questions

One of the biggest money sucks at the U.is women's basketball with about a $4 million per negative margin. Unless the barn starts seeing routine capacity crowds for women's hoops, that negative margin will only grow.

RandBall: Where’s the money? Gophers budget shortfall raises questions

Because of Title IX, Men's non-revenue sports will bear the brunt of the budget shortfalls. They'll need to be privately financed or will get axed. The problem is that you would damn near need to cut all sports besides FB, MBB and MH to balance the budget and that won't sit well with some...

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

It could still be better. The allocation of revenue to FB should be higher and at least match the revenue attributable to FB.

    10-2 - tell me I’m wrong

Should I be? I'm told that this is as good as its been in 50 years by folks like you and that this is as good as it gets and shouldn't expect more, to which I unfortunately agree.

    10-2 - tell me I’m wrong

No, but I'd take their success during my lifetime over the success of our program..

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

I agree with most of this although I would note that it's hard to compare to some extent considering the lack of institutional support for several decades. I think the support now is still lacking but it's better than where it was 30 years ago.

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

Your comparison actually supports my point. But Alvarez took a team that had 1 winning season (none in the Big 10) the entire decade prior and won a Big 10 championship and Rose Bowl in year 4. Fleck took a team that won 7 games the year before year "zero" and went backwards before ascending...

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

Sure, there's the year over year turnover that occurs. But the original premise is that this is a program that's changing or transforming, as if this is still year "zero." But the overall structure remains the same. This program is built out. What's different today from 2017 or 2019? No one...

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

This isn't about other programs. This is about PJ'S Minnesota. The thread within the thread started with an assertion that PJ is "building" a program (and some other malarkey that we are a top 25 program and on the cusp of CFP contention). I maintain that in fact the program isn't building...

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

You obviously don't know what a premise is. Let's consider 2019 Heather. As you know we finished the season ranked what, 10 in the CFP rankings? With 2 wins against teams with winning records. How many times has PJ won 11 games since? -0- How many times has PJ won 10 games since? -0-. How...

    10-2 - tell me I’m wrong

Sure, but some here would have us believe 2019 is proof we're on the verge of the CFP. It can be true that annual beatings can be proof that one coaching staff knows how to consistently outcoach another. And talent being more or less a wash, I'd put my money on the Hawkeyes until Fleck proves...

    10-2 - tell me I’m wrong

Hawkeyes have been gaining ground over the last eight seasons.

    10-2 - tell me I’m wrong

One for how many against the Hawkeyes (with the asterisk of controversial call) .... and OK. GH doesn't meltdown once a year for nothing.

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

You ignore my premise - the program has been built, it is no longer being built. 2019 is ancient history and was accomplished in part with players from the previous regime. Where is the indication that the program has been on an upward trajectory since 2019? I of course allowed that perhaps PJ...

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

PF has been here since 2017. Where is the evidence that the program is still be built going into season 9? I would argue that the program is built and there isn't evidence of an upward trajectory anymore. The ceiling is 9 wins but probably the realistic expectation each year is 7 or 8 wins...

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

Given the conservative nature of PJ's offenses, its hard to imagine our team being double digit favorites ever.

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

I'm not a gambler but does beating the spread mean winning the game? Might it also mean not losing as bad as the odds makers/betters think they will?

P.J. Fleck gets a new contract extension—pending approval from Board of Regents—keeping him under contract until 2030.

There are suites and premium club seating. And while attendance has improved, most games still have empty seats. Why add amenities for which there seemingly is no demand?

    Fleck's Good Wins at Minnesota

How many of these were upset wins? I think that would be a reverse corollary to the "bad losses" discussion. My perception, which may or may not be factual, is that Fleck averages about a loss a year to a team he should certainly beat, does ok against evenly matched opponents, and only very...
