ESPN: Effort to unionize college athletes hits stumbling block

To a person of a certain age TSR time had more to do with Gary Gygax than ambulance chasers.

We’re approaching this all wrong. The officiating crews should be getting the pay for play deals. Holding, interference can be applied in creative ways. Let’s not overthink this. Work smarter not harder 🙃

Greder: The U’s total NIL fund is roughly $2.5 million, so an 8-5 season can be considered a quality return on investment.

If Vikings fans could be made to understand they can possibly buy a championship…

Revisiting my predictions for Gophers football.

Thanks for this; always interesting to see how our preconceptions evolve over the year. Very, very few sportswriters or poll-takers ever go back and publicly roast themselves over their preseason opinions. The run game issue was probably the biggest deviance from expected.

There are at least two generations of sportswriters and ADs with confirmation bias to overcome.

ASU Texas was an epic game, they definitely belonged. The spread on that game was 13.5 points which illustrates the common man/conventional wisdom knows nothing. As far as Boise getting a bid ahead of eg Penn State it’s solely because they won their conference. I think that’s a better system...

Minnesota’s Corey Hetherman new defensive coordinator at Miami

In a hypothetical world where antitrust law were applied, the proposed ~20M salary cap did not exist and programs were free to spend any amount on player salaries what would the coach contracts naturally settle at? I’d guess about 1/3 to 1/5 of current? Coaches are important and a very, very...

Base pay 400K+ supplemental income 380K last year (plus bonuses). For all intents and purposes the supplemental income is salary. Fleck’s base salary is also 400K + 5.6M + bonuses including ~ 1 million in yearly retention. In a more perfect world the assistants might get paid more, head...

But, how do you determine the top seeds?

I didn’t think they looked great. They looked good/very good but far less than the juggernaut people expected. I’m not going to budge on this.

Money >> coaches now. It is what it is. Plenty of good coaches out there.

Two losses should disqualify a regular season as “great” but I think good people can disagree on this.

Is it fair that Notre Dame is independent?

How much would Purdue make if OSU, Michigan, Penn State, USC ditch the conference? How much would OSU, Michigan, Penn State, and USC make if congress took action on media conglomerate business practices?

It’s probably never a good thing the coaching carousel occurs in the dead of winter. Who wouldn’t want to go to Miami for a couple years 🤷‍♂️ Oh well. On to the next.

They didn’t look great. They’ve looked sorta great in the playoff. And that’s good enough.

I see conventional wisdom has the Domers as a 9.5 pt dog. That seems a little optimistic given their struggles to move the ball versus Texas, who had really struggled to stop Arizona State. Riley’s elite mobility will be a wildcard, and Father Dowd will need to bless the receiver’s hands...

I didn’t think Georgia looked great either. Performing better than or squeaking by another team, and looking like a historically great team are two different things. I can’t quantify it but we’re seeing more parity, less juggernaut this year. That’s why I give the Irish a fighting chance.

Is it fair that Notre Dame is independent?

I’m sure top teams have considered the dollars and sense of leaving and might well do that in some cases except for conference contracts. They could probably throw their weight around even more if they wanted to.

Which of the two games seems more fluky in hindsight? OSU didn’t look great pretty much all year but are ripping up the playoff field, when the chips are down. I think that’s part of the essence of sports, at least if not moreso than the wins and losses of a short regular season. They played...

ESPN: Effort to unionize college athletes hits stumbling block

IIRC the union formation was at least partially a ploy to help the league/owners avoid antitrust scrutiny. It probably benefits owners at least as much if not moreso than players. The individual players have enormous negotiating power. In the real world, maybe not as much.
