Per Greder:

The Wisconsin Badgers’ latest successful recruiting forays into the state of Minnesota will put Gophers men’s basketball head coach Niko Medved’s recruiting strategy under the microscope for years to come.

The Badgers made a stronger push for Maple Grove wing Babou Ann since the calendar flipped to 2026, and the four-star recruit committed to Wisconsin on June 25. Meanwhile, the Gophers did not offer a scholarship to Ann’s high school teammate, 7-foot-1 center Jake Thelen, and that three-star prospect pledged to Wisconsin on June 13.

How these two Minnesotans fare in Madison, Wis., over the next five years will reflect on Medved’s decisions to not recruit them harder to stay home.

Go Gophers!!

It's insignificant if we continue to improve in the conference standings. One piece of kindling if we don't.
Can we win 8 conference games again in 26-27? Or? Can we do better? Either one and I don't think it's a talker. Not like we have a history of getting these guys to stay home.

It sucks when talented in-state players commit somewhere else and it especially sucks when that somewhere else is Wisconsin but that is just how it goes in recruiting. Madison is a little over 4 hours from the Twin Cities....it isn't like it is some shocker that a school like Wisconsin would have some appeal to local recruits who maybe want to get away from home but not go too far.

Also...in this current era of college basketball.....let's see how long either of those guys even stays at Wisconsin. With the way guys transfer they could be out the door in a year and playing somewhere else.

Sure, if you ignore double figure scorers in Steven Crowl, Tyler Wahl, and Brad Davison. Then it's only Nolan Winter.
He said the last five years and Wahl wasn't that good, but he hustled. The kids we are currently recruiting were six or seven years old when Brad committed to Wisconsin and maybe ten years old when Crowl would have committed?

imo the impact isn't when they committed....the outcome is unknown...but its did they contribute?
Wahl not that good compared to who? He played in 31 games as a Freshman, he was consistent...he averaged 11 points a game and 6 rebounds his final 3 years. He finished up 2 seasons ago...pretty recently.
Davison averaged 14 points ppg four years ago.
They will have had a double figure scorer from Minnesota for 10 consecutive years after this season.
Lotta pressure on Babou Ann or Thelen to continue the streak.

Fair point on Brad, even though he was a super senior that year, I wanted Crowl but I know their fans were frustrated with his rebounding and defense against better teams but he always got up for games in the barn. Wahl was a Johnny try hard, nice to have, but at the end of day dudes like him are a dime a dozen. In a case like that it's more about missing on guys that we wanted, not sure Pitino even spoke to Wahl

So guys that play 30 minutes and average 11pts and 6 boards their three final years in a program, plays 5 years, and is a key member of multiple NCAA tournament teams is a dime a dozen? Not sure I agree with that. Agree he is not a program changing type of player.

I mean you should be averaging that if your starting and playing 30 minutes a night, so yeah dime a dozen

Had Wahl or Davison came here they would have been heroes. I disklike bucky as much as anyone else, but we need to be honest here. We would kill to have those two players whether they were from MN, WI, or Rhode Island

Baboucorr was obviously a miss and they wanted him but roster makeup lessened the need for someone like Thelen. You have to prioritize and not offering Thelen makes sense. Niko is building the team as he see's it. Just have to wait awhile to determine if they were big misses.

It’s a tired lazy article that’s been written a hundred times. They never seem to mention how Wisconsin can’t keep any of their top talent and get beat out by Iowa state in their backyard by a much wider margin than they bring talent from MN over. The reality is there are some kids that want to go out of state for college and a neighboring state is far but not too far.

In fact you have to go back to 2017 for them to get a top two in state recruit to stay home via 247. Granted some years Wisconsin's top school player isn’t highly ranked according to 247. In the same time period Wisconsin has 1 top recruit Iowa State has 7!

Wisconsin top two recruits by year:
26
Zens is going to Illinois
Gray jr is going to Iowa state

25- not a consensus top two
Batemon Iowa state
Allen Alabama
Mitchell Iowa state

24
Knueppel duke
Janowski Nebraska

23
Momcilovic- Iowa state
Lorenz wafford

22
Trimble UNC
Bond III virginia

21 (added #3 due to his success)
Baldwin jr milwaukee
Hunter Iowa state
Podzimski Illinois

20
Johnson duke
Graham Maryland

19 no players in the top 200

18
Hero Kentucky
Hauser Marquette
McCabe West Virginia
Haliburton Iowa State

2017
Kobe king Wisconsin
Lewis Iowa state

Adding in bold, the players from Minnesota that went to wisconsin

In short, I don't think that if all the Minnesota players since 2017 chose Minnesota rather than wisconsin it would change the trajectory of our seasons by much
