Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.

IMO this is a little tip of the iceberg.

In all reality what did people think would happen when Vegas and pro sports went to bed??
Vegas had gambling on pro sports, and college sports too, LONG before any of this junk started happening.

Agree and it is going to be difficult to get the toothpaste back in the tube. My guess is players are betting a lot more and a lot more often than we know. Are they betting on themselves? I find it difficult to believe that's a line not to be crossed for a bunch of players.

nah Paxton wants to be involved. Letter sent on behalf of his office

What would happen if each week's opponent was in the Covid protocol?

Surely you couldn't sue them over that, right?

If they weren’t before, they will absolutely be doing it now. Texas Tech just showed every NCAA athlete that there aren’t any real consequences to making bets on your own team.

Unless the courts or NCAA reverse this over the summer, I expect multiple points shaving or other betting scandals next season.

Agreed, some of these kids are going to get into financial trouble and be willing to take the risk. Cue organized crime to enter the fray. Once college football isn't seen as a fair way to bet, won't people just bet on other things? There are plenty of sports betting options. Isn't this a major threat to the college football business model? Legal betting brings a lot of money in, right? The whole college football machine should be scared of what Texas Tech is doing. I just can't believe TT can win when basically all of college football is against them. That's a lot of institutions, power and money.

Legalized sports betting (or “futures contracts” per CFTC….) and presto, no longer does a gambler (futures contract trader) need a trip to Nevada, a reservation casino, a bookie.

Not only that but so many people are able to easily gamble from their phones now the winnings for every gameplay, statistic can be pretty substantial in some cases enormous which is a strong feedback loop.

There is of course the longstanding rumors that criminal enterprises have long laundered money through casinos in concert with fabricated/orchestrated sporting event outcomes, ie NFL and others. Plausible? I don’t know. Now the players have their own self interests and perhaps some outside motivation to steer things a certain way. It’s got to be tempting? Congress?

I mean that isn't surprising at all.....teams have been getting recruits laid forever.
I’m just assuming that Texas Tech told him that they have a friendly judge who will rule that prostitution and sex trafficking must be allowed, lest the denial of such services would cause the recruit irreparable harm.

And that they have a geneticist on staff to prove that the recruit and “a couple females” are cousins, so it’s super okay.

And they have Maury Povich ready to say "You're NOT the father!"

But, like MNVCGUY said, this particular recruiting method is nothing new. I'm just surprised that a recruit came forward to admit it. It's not the same, but remember when Lydon Murtha spilled the beans about being taken to Deja Vu along with a bunch of other recruits by his player hosts and it caused quite a kerfuffle.

Big 12 files lawsuit seeking to clear way to sanction Texas Tech for playing Brendan Sorsby

The Big 12 filed a lawsuit in federal court Monday over the Brendan Sorsby saga, asking the court to bar Texas Tech and the state attorney general from preventing the league from sanctioning Texas Tech if the quarterback plays for the Red Raiders.

The Big 12 presidents are scheduled to meet Monday to discuss potential sanctions against Texas Tech, though a final decision is unlikely to come out of that meeting.

I hope they have a decision by gametime.

He has until June 22 to declare for the draft. I think it would be wise to do so.

The B12 lawsuit is kind of funny

"The Big 12 and its Member Institutions [apparently save TTU] have no interest in being required to endorse or even appearing to endorse unethical and indeed unlawful conduct that strikes at the heart of athletic integrity," the filing reads.

TTU by going this route is going to take all the flak that would've gone backwards to possibly Cinci or Indiana. This is such an impressively dumb hill to die on.

I never thought about the bold, but yeah, good point. Didn't Cincy reveal the gambling stuff after he refused to pay back his 2026 NIL because he left for TT? Yeah, they should be the ones getting heat for an ineligible player, but geez, if Sorsby would've just paid them back....

This is what being an a**hole gets you. I hope the 22nd comes and goes and then he's ruled ineligible.

Not surprised, but was unaware that the Big 12 was a Delaware corporation

The Big 12 is asking a federal court to bar Texas Tech and the state's attorney general, Ken Paxton, from preventing the conference from "exercising its right under its bylaws to sanction Texas Tech."

Michigan of all schools has decided that TT has gone too far and canceled a volleyball game with them….

How messed up does it have to be that Michigan decides you screwed up?
