Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.

It is pretty crazy to see anything these days that gets nearly universal agreement.
This is one of those things where it’s about sports and someone undermining the idea of sport in the most fundamental way.

Anyone with the slightest clue about incentives and second order effects would conclude this is all just insane.

And this comes amidst so much uncertainty surrounding college football future… probably sets off people even more.

It's definitely a gamble on their part.

What does the attorney general of Texas have to do with any of this? Seems like a private party matter to me.

Edit: maybe he meant to say Texas Tech's general counsel or something and just got confused?

It's Texas.

I wonder what the Texas AG has against Univ of Houston, Baylor, & TCU which are also in both Texas & the Big 12.

At this point every fan should cancel every streaming service they have that carries college football and just start a boycott.

Not sure how TT can let him play. any Pick he throws, every 3rd down red zone incompletion, every fumble, will have everyone wondering is he made a prop bet. TT will be scrutinized for everything they do on the field, every mistake people will wonder if someone on TT has a bet going on. they have basically told there team to make any type of bet you want on your team, we dont care as long as you win.

Wow! GopherTheJugular is really living up to his name!

Wouldn't it be more effective to just boycott Texas Tech? If I stop watching college football, it hurts me. If I just stop watching Texas Tech and a bunch of other people do too, it hurts us very little, but them a lot. It also puts every other college team on notice that they can ACTUALLY do some things that are bad enough it will blow up their program.

Consumers boycott things all the time - Target, Disney, Anheuser Busch - and those companies changed their behavior. I just won't watch any game that involves Texas Tech, maybe ever. If they play my team, I won't buy a ticket. Texas Tech and the Big 12 would notice if Texas Tech's road games were 90% empty. The home team will scream bloody murder from the lost revenue! After this happens the first time, future home teams will catch on quickly and have very little incentive to field a competitive team when no one is paying to watch. They'll just field their B-squad to avoid injury and call it a developmental game. Seriously, how funny would all of this be to watch take place? That's what I call making lemonade out of lemons!

They'll also notice if none of their opponent's fans ever travel to watch TT home games. Lower demand means lower ticket prices. Plus, some of their own fans are likely to warm up to the indignant wave and join themselves. How quickly will many of them jump off the sinking ship? The TV networks, Big 12, and CFP committee will notice when Texas Tech pulls terrible numbers. The value of Texas Tech football will plummet.

Competing teams and conferences are afraid of getting sued by Texas Tech or taking a stand that they will regret in the future when their own important player does something bad and they don't want to hold them accountable. The only thing that will make them overcome that fear is lost revenue. I know TT has a lot of money, but they can't sue everyone.

I'd think at least some small version of this was a lock to happen, but it didn't happen with Michigan so probably won't happen here.

Interesting takes by Bomani Jones on the issue
I understand Jones' argument, but aside of the point about Sorsby making a youthful mistake (if the sports equivalent of insider trading is simply a youthful indiscretion) it just seems like an apologia for the jockocracy. I said it a few years back right after O'Bannon that the NCAA would be heading for the morgue and it's just happening a bit faster than I envisioned.

I don't know if anyone here has watched I Think You Should Leave, but there's a skit where one of the characters says:

Right, so why will anyone watch? The WWE already exists for people that like fake sports.

I actually think TT games will see an uptick in viewing from people hate watching.

The statement from the Texas AG bailed out the Big 12 from having to make a decision with big financial implications as they are usually top 3 in viewing within the conference [behind the mormons and buffs depending on what deon said that week].

TT released a 22 minute video. TCU had a hilarious response.

I made it about 1:30 through the video before I had to cut it off.

Would have more respect for all of them if they would just come out and say they want to win football games and they think Sorsby can win them games so they don't give a crap that he bet on games in the past.

They could give a crap about Sorsby, if he wasn't a QB they would have just sent him packing the moment they found out about the gambling.
