Gopher Hockey Recruiting

USHL is getting watered down. Non NTDP might as well stay in MN HS through their junior year and go to the CHL for one or two years.

don't completely agree as number of games and focus on hockey are higher leaving HS, but agree that the benefit is lesser compared to what it used to be. That said, 60 games versus older competition is exactly what some guys need comparatively. The league stylistically has changed quite a bit

there are far too many also ran leagues in the US that are just aggressive money grabs, but that's another discussion.

Is Katz going to enroll at some CCHA school or what? With the 5 in 5 looming he might end up with three seasons of eligibility.

With CHL and 5 in 5, the older competition is going to suck a lot more at hockey.

tbh, i don't think it's going to change for many people. think a lot of guys are going to be fine giving up 1 year and coming in with 4 to go. end of the bench guys are going to be done after college hockey anyway, same with guys who'd end up in ECHL. Some will change their commits, but I don't think it's going to be because they want 5 years in college

Think you're just going to see graduation rates drop.

11 of the top 20 in scoring in the USHL would not have been there this year if they wanted to get 4 years in college.

Impossible to draw any conclusions off a class who had no knowledge that the ncaa was going to be a bunch of idiots this year and until weeks ago were going to be grandfathered in

My point is by taking all the somewhat-good-to-good grad+2 and grad+3 players out of the league, the quality of play will go down.

they're going to end up somewhere. There's nowhere near enough room in college hockey for them. you're right some will end up in the CCHA or AHA, but those leagues also have no incentive to take those guys in large amounts (and the B10 and NCHC are not taking those guys in large quantities)

At 16-17, playing against 20 year olds is still going to be beneficial for some guys depending on the quality of your HS schedule. It's not like MN HS hockey would be rolling in killing teams in the USHL or even the NAHL purely because of physical readiness. The NTDP 17s lost to the Mallards

it's going to level out across the leagues the upper (WHL, OHL, USHL) tier. If anything, you may see it end up being more appealing to younger guys if rosters start phasing out older players as there's no real reason for them to stay and no real reason for teams to hold guys going nowhere.

Oh my god... GPL saying not getting top CHL players because they've already given a roster spot to Harris/Begley/Nevers...

Silly bad take over there and one you’d assume coach worth his salt is not doing. He may also be waiting post draft to let some of these forwards see what they want to do based on their drafting teams

USHL has announced expansion into the West. Will be looking to establish member teams in AZ, NV, CA

Not really sure, prior to the NCAA changing the rules on CHL eligibility, the USHL and CHL were pretty even once you get beyond the Gavin McKenna's and other top prospects.. Do agree that top Minnesota talent would be just fine staying in high school. Though with the new NCAA eligibility rules perhaps the depth of the CHL leagues will get better as guys hoping to go to college won't have to stay in the BCHL, SHL, OJHL and QJHL, AJHL etc

With each day... looks like the roster won't change at all. Yikes.

Mid-summer roster changes aren't that uncommon, there's still time.
The likelihood goes does every day and the impact of the draft is overrated cuz the Gophers aren't in the mix for top 15 guys

Tbh there’s zero way to know this. Secondarily, the impact of the draft is wildly different now, particularly with a coach who now recruits the CHL.

Do I think the roster is going to change meaningfully? Probably not. Is it realistic Larson is also keeping his roster slots open and telling a kid to take their time if they want the opportunity to talk to their drafting team about CHL vs NCAA? 1000%

Guys are just getting back to campus to start up training together again

Your conversation with Vegoe on GPL shows there isn't much money left after retaining Mooney and Ziemer.

He always leans WAY positive on the team to keep a good relationship with the staff for media purposes.

it shows his preference on priorities and notes we don't have a never ending supply like perhaps PSU would have trying to ask Pegula for more when they run out.

I agree yes he does lean way positive on the team. Based on conversations with others, I think there are certain guys they would find a way to get on campus and that they're willing to wait to make decisions on that set of guys. There is no rush right now. The combine just ended and this is a Jr heavy camp season right now. Lots of scouting and recruiting still being done and Larson has said as much. We'll see if that leads to them taking anyone else or not, but I don't think they've closed up shop

This is such a boring take. It's a lot more fun (for some people) to be in a complete, sky-is-falling, downward spiral right now, and choosing to believe this coaching staff has no idea what they are doing. Your approach is just dull. Way too calm and sensible.

Schloss just put out that he believes Minnesota is still in play for DuPont. Last ditch effort from Larson getting the boosters to pony up?

would have to have @arcticpurple weigh in, but I don't think this is a "dollars" so much as development decision and where he feels comfortable based on everything I've read about him. Otherwise Smith, Larson knowing Dupont's dad, etc. wouldn't really even be a factor. Have to be in the ballpark, but the kid is going to (and already) making big money on endorsements.

I agree, but I think there’s still a floor of what you gotta pay to be in the conversation. Michigan probably has the best pitch since they will most likely be the favorite and happen to still have a spot open for a #1 D and pp quarterback. MSU has Chase Reid so I don’t know how that would work (also not as great of a track record as us and Mich as far as development for NHL goes).

I’d think our pitch would fall somewhere between those two but who knows.

you have to wonder a little what some of these guys who have been rostered there think. Mews (3rd rd RHD) got hurt last year but killed in the OHL (61 pts in 65 games, 7 in 7 games at the WJCs as Canada's leading scoring D man ahead of Schaefer in his draft year) followed by 82 points in 68 games the following year. Had 9 pts in 10 games (6 of those on the PP) before he got hurt last year.
Also have Robertson back

Obviously they'll put the full court press on him because he is that type of player, but I don't know if the pitch is that wildly different than what MNs (veteran D man/Murr and add that we can play with his D partner Smith) to a player who knows all these guys.

Dupont is extremely talented, but I don't think its as simple as they're going to guarantee him the #1 RHD role

That’s fair, Mews also was playing good before he got hurt last year. DuPont may not be necessarily guaranteed that guy for them, but they’ll have him thinking that on his visit. Wouldn’t think we’d be that far off with all the other outside factors/connections.

Michigan has a lot of cooks in the kitchen next year and I’ve been curious how some of those guys are gonna handle lesser minutes and different roles.
