Your favorite bits of Gopher lore or obscure details

1973- Minnesota 19 at Illinois 16. It's the day that Gil Fash becomes a legend as the Gophers pull off an all-time heist. They are outgained by the Illini by 440 yards to 83, with the Gophers making just 4 first downs. They trail 16-6 with 3 minutes left in the game. How in the world did they win? Well. Illinois has the ball at their own 5-yard line when they lose their 5th fumble. The Gophers recover and score on the next play. On the next Illinois possession, they lose fumble #6 at their own 30-yard line. Fash, who is making his first start due to injuries to John Lawing and Tony Dungy, has completed just 1 of his 11 passes to this point with 4 interceptions. But he steps up to hit tight end Dale Henricksen with a 29-yard touchdown pass and the Gophers walk off as winners!

1974- Minnesota 23 Iowa 17. Rick Upchurch streaks 86 yards for a score ( a school record until DT came along) on the first Gopher possession and finishes with 210 rushing yards. He will play just 2 years for Minnesota and then 9 years for the Broncos (1975-1983), catching passes for 4.300 yards and returning 8 punts. for touchdowns

I know everyone is picking one play or one game, but this streak is / has been awesome to be a part of.

We win bowl.games. It is always fun, no matter if the season wasn't overall what we wanted it to be, to head into the off-season and spend months until next season with the last game under our belt being a victory in a bowl game.

I don't know why it's subbed in bowling Green for Virginia tech but you get where I'm going

I wish I could bottle up that Penn State game and experience the fun of that game frequently.

I really thought we made it and that was going to become the new normal of Gopher football.
I thought the same thing.

Yeah for real. I know sometimes people say they don't care because they're not the major bowls, but winning them consistently is fun. What was NOT fun was that other streak from 2005-2014. Especially since five of the losses in the seven bowls of that span were by four points or less. Going out with a close loss like in 2009 by one point was rough.

Here's one, this year will be the 20th time in Minnesota's history it has played a game on Halloween. The overall record for the Golden Gophers is 8-7-4.

A game was scheduled for 2020 but obviously that didn't happen. Regardless, here are the results for when Minnesota played on the spookiest day of the year.
  • 1888 - Vs. Shattuck, Won, 14-0
  • 1891 - Vs. Grinnel, Tie, 12-12
  • 1896 - Vs. Ex Collegiates, Won, 8-0
  • 1903 - Vs. Michigan, Tie, 6-6 (The Jug Game)

Are you referring to that Bowl Game with Iowa State, in which the Gophers were in easy field goal range at the very end, only to have Gray lose a fumble at the Cyclone 20 yard-line?
