Gopher Softball 2026

I’ve heard nothing. But now that regionals are nearly over I’d think we may get a clue this week. I like Wagner with USD and has p4 experience, but may be content retiring in Vermillion?

Any wish lists? Within the region Augustana and Winona state have very long tenured successful D2 coaches. We know Tschida is not going to jump, maybe D2 coaches content at that level as well.

Mid majors, St Thomas staff is newer yes but has been recruiting the best MN talent right now. Creighton’s coach has done quite well at every stop. Trying to think outside the D1 assistant box but there are many quality there as well. Wish the new staff luck whomever it is!

Just throwing this name out there just because of Minnesota/Midwestern ties Michael Mook West Texas A&M.

Can she recruit and build a staff at the D1 level? I’m just asking as I m sure it’s going to be a challenge going from D11 to D1 and most kids not knowing who she may be.

That would be the next question. Hopefully that was talked about during the interview process. Time will tell on that one.

Hopefully, she drove a hard bargain for NIL and startup funds. If you don't get good support coming in, you aren't going to get much later.

Went from back to back 50 win seasons to barely over .500 this season. What happened?

I’m looking forward to the change in leadership. Is this the right move? We will learn fast. Hopefully she can build a great staff with some experience

Did her good players get raided for better NIL and perhaps higher ranked schools?
Looks like went from 2 dominant seniors on the mound to an all new pitching staff. Had a freshman lead them through the tournament and still made a regional this year after losing those pitchers. Also had a national freshman of the year finalist this year.

I heard Schwartz wanted to before she even knew. But could be hearsay. I would expect that to be the case with multiple. Honestly it’s going to happen to every school with a coaching change. Saw AZ state coach say when she got there a few years ago she had 10 players or something. Could be exploring options but maybe some stay as well even after entering.

I know this, the top travel ball director in the state is pumped about this hire and he sends a lot of kids on to P4’s. Get those kids to stay home! I’m optimistic from all I hear, and hope each year she keeps this program climbing.

Any rumblings of possible assistant coaches?
The job posting for an assistant coach has been removed. I think this is the second time this has happened. I assume it means that means at least one assistant has been hired.

Interesting staff lol - I am going to assume she had zero money for a staff. I hope I am wrong and they blow it out of the water and get us back to the tourney in a few years. I like the Newman hire though

I like it, as someone that’s just getting into higher travel ball in the cities, I can tell you they all love it around here too. Rather than grabbing D1 has beens, they grabbed a D2 hall of famer and her trusted staff who won without the resources and a pitching coach with a proven track record and familiar to the area. I say support them and see what they can do. Are we going to flip and win the conference, maybe not, hard to compete with the big time money of other schools. But hopefully they can make an impact on the team and get them going in the right direction. Lots of D2 coaches making the jump to D1 this year it looked like.

As someone who's been in travel ball for awhile, it is definitely not all.
