Minnesota (Andrew Mercer)

When it comes to Penn State’s relationship with Minnesota, there’s an often overlooked historical piece involved that would make this season’s White Out all the more meaningful — the Governor’s Victory Bell trophy.

Therefore, contrary to popular opinion, I believe that Penn State should host Minnesota for the annual White Out game, especially considering the close finish between the two in 2024.

The pair first met in 1993, which was the Nittany Lions’ first-ever Big Ten conference game in program history. With Campbell coming to Happy Valley as the new head coach, playing the same opponent that Penn State played in its Big Ten debut as his first White Out would be poetic.

Additionally, Minnesota would be an easier team for Campbell’s White Out debut compared to USC. The Golden Gophers went 5-4 in the Big Ten last season, and Minnesota’s over/under on FanDuel is set to 6.5 wins this regular season, with -158 odds of the Golden Gophers winning less than that figure.

There’s not only the feat of winning Penn State’s signature home game on the line, but the fact that it’s Campbell’s first means he’ll likely wish to make the best impression on the fanbase.

The best way of doing so would be emerging victorious, something Penn State has done in a White Out against Minnesota previously. The Nittany Lions hosted the Golden Gophers in the annual spectacle in 2022, emerging with a 45-17 victory.

On the spectator side of things, there’s the possibility that broadcast rights to the USC game would be picked up by Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff. Nearly all prior White Out games were played at night, with the special exception of when Penn State faced SMU in the College Football Playoffs at noon.

With that said, should Fox claim the USC game and the time be set for noon, that would put Minnesota in prime position to be Penn State’s White Out opponent.

The only wrinkle with Minnesota as the White Out opponent is the date of the matchup. Because it's currently scheduled for Nov. 14, that means the Golden Gophers would have to agree to play at night, something they might choose not to do to avoid the White Out crowd.

Regardless, playing Minnesota in the White Out would be an easy way for Campbell to have a successful first experience coaching in that atmosphere.

Go Gophers!!

The Victory Bell is a bigger deal in State College than it is to Gophers fans for whatever reason.

Are there conference night games in November now? I thought that stopped a few years ago.

I love having the Gophers playing the White Out game. By that time of year we will be in a place where we will be part of the CFP conversation and destroying PSU at their white out game will solidify our deserved place as part of the CFP fellowship.

100% - I rank our trophy games in the following order:
1) Axe
2) Pig
3) Jug
4) Broken Chair
5) Victory Bell

Never once when we played Penn State did I ever think 'we need to get the bell back' anymore than I thought 'it would be nice to beat Penn State.'

You have it backwards. Other than the HHH Dome it was never a thing, except maybe an exception here and there for early November if the teams were ok with it.

Billion dollar Media Rights package that started in 2023 made such night games regular. No way NBC signs on without it.

Disagree. Was there a few years ago. Electric atmosphere.
Agree that the atmoshere at the beginning was up there having 100K+ all amped up. That said, the stadium is sort of a dump, getting there was challenging (flew into Pittsburgh) because it is in the middle of nowhere, parking was what seemed like a mile away, took forever to get out after. Checked it off my college football bucket list but probably won't do it again.

Agree. Plus, the trophy is pretty lame looking.

It was very tough getting there, but staying in State College was awesome (albeit super expensive).

Felt bad for everyone sitting in those massive parking lots trying to exit the stadium as we walked back to the campus bars

Axe and Pig should be 1A and 1B, order is personal preference. But agreed otherwise

this. i thought PSU was a damn good time when there a few years ago.

The game sucked as we got our asses kicked, but the bars were fun

As an aside, holy cow PSUs schedule suuuuuuuuuuucks

home: Marshall, Buffalo, WI, USC, Purdue, MN, Rutgers
away: temple, NW, Michigan, Washington, MD

If this team wasn't rebuilding, this is an incredibly easy path to the playoff type schedule

Has to be the easiest schedule in the big ten.

Calling this “poetic” is insane. Dude just connected enough red string between two trivia facts to convince himself he found fate.

It's a hindenburg's chance that Campbell would be playing Minnesota, the first ever B10 Penn State opponent, in his first whiteout game. Specifically a 1/15 chance. Think of how poetic it would have been if we played them for his first Big Ten game.....or first homecoming....or first last game of the season. Who knew that football was so full of poetry?

The white out is overrated nonsense.
Tell me you haven’t been to a white out without telling me you haven’t been to a whiteout.

I’ve attended one and it was most definitely not overrated. My kid went to law school there and had student season tickets for two of his three years (non ticket season was the covid season). He was always quite complimentary of the white out - not only the game itself but the build up and atmosphere all around campus all week long. As others have said, people get to their seats early for the white out because it is worth the extra time investment.

They should just play with themselves and wear white. Very overrated. By the time that game comes around they will be 500.
