All Things Gopher Baseball

> This team underachieved and that is very disappointing.

> They played a lot of good baseball but that didn’t always lead to the result.

Coach McDevitt mentioned on some podcast I think he wanted the team to be one that hit home runs, stole bases, could pitch and was sound defensively. One could argue they checked a lot of those boxes. They finished the conference 6th in HRs, T5th in SBs, 5th in ERA, 4th in WHIP, 5th in BAA, 8th in FldPct. We were +14 in run differential...and yet it all added up to an 11-19 record. 🤷‍♂️
That is the concerning thing, all of those good statistics and a senior laden line up and finished 11-19 with only those few wins against the top 8 teams. ERA was good overall, but still the bullpen lost multiple leads the last two weeks. 2-4 was needed at home, they went 1-5 while scoring 50 runs and hitting14 homeruns in the 6 games. That is pretty hard to do.

Losing a player like Berkland really hurt but Hamilton, Allen and Bello were good (not great) additions. Bello seemed to come on at the end. Would have been interesting to see how Lippe would have ended the season had he not gotten hurt. He wasn't providing much. Allen is the only one with eligibility left so I would expect us to hit the portal hard once again.

Even though Remington was a good bullpen piece, it's encouraging that we really improved our team in the pitching department. Morton + Kruzman have eligibility left.

I think Bello and Lippe will actually have another year of eligibility. Bello via a medical redshirt at Air Force and Lippe maybe a medical for this year, neither guy went through senior day.
Morton is a top 150 prospect so really really doubtful we get him back.

Salt in the wounds....12th seed Michigan State beats #5 seed Purdue in the tourny opener by a score of 8-4.

Purdue has collapsed down the stretch and will miss the NCAA. Would have been a perfect opportunity for the Gophers to make a run to quarterfinals. Oh well.

Thinking about the tiebreaker more why the hell would you use record against top 8 instead of common opponents? Common opponents at least it’s an even playing field, record against top 8 could be very unbalanced results. People that run Big Ten baseball have never been accused of being the smartest.
When my team finds itself in a position to clinch a post season berth by simply preserving a 6-1 lead heading into the ninth at home, Im not concerned with the equities of the tiebreaker criteria.

My point didn't apply at all to this year. Both us and Michigan State played a very comparable top 8. I'm just pointing out why that tiebreaker is probably not a great idea moving forward.

Purdue is a pretty soft #5 seed. Four of their 10 series were vs. the bottom five.

The Gophers played three, MSU only two.

Long time Big 10 conference rivals UCLA and Oregon (🤦‍♂️) square off in the tourney final, with the Bruins winning on a walk-off HBP.

Same four teams as last year again advance to tournament. Michigan listed among first four out by committee.

I haven't seen any other Gophers enter the portal thusfar. I suspect many are waiting until the college season concludes. I did see Paul Jones enter the portal from Maryland. Played 1B for the Terps and hit .323 with 12 HR this year as a sophomore. Went to Cretin and is the grandson of Cesar Tovar. I suspect he will move on to bigger/better things but you never know....maybe he's homesick. :)

I know the Gophers have expressed interest.
From what I heard there are a few Gophers expected to portal but they are guys looking for playing time.

At this point the gophers should just scrap the baseball program and use the funds for hockey. They clearly don’t care or aren’t able to compete at a high level

Martin and Quinn are not surprises. Martin fell out of favor and didn't play the last two months (unless he was hurt)

Surprised Quinn couldn't find the field. Really liked him out of high school.

I was wondering too on Martin and assumed he probably was injured. I do recall, however, a game at US Bank where Martin struck out looking not for the first time in the game, and there was a very strong reaction from the coaching staff with some 'cover the children's ears' language, and Martin was benched after it. I do think Martin has talent and won't be surprised if he has success at the next stop, but agree with you it isn't a surprise at this point.

Martin fell out favor and then was hurt late in the year, maybe would have got some time at DH but I certainly think they were looking to bring in more competition there.
Quinn is a guy I really liked too and the sentiment from many seems to be he was a very likable player within the program and just is looking to play and with a couple corner OF back, a guy there definitely isn't hard feelings with from anyone with the program.

The close games and an inconsistent offense catch up to UCLA, as the wire to wire number 1 team goes 1-2 in their own regional and is done. Ouch.

Nebraska struggled to hit and after ending up 4th in the country in fielding percentage, they committed multiple errors and went 1-2 in their home regional. By the way opening game attendance versus South Dakota State was slightly over 8000.

Dobis to portal.
Dobis is a strange evaluation. His numbers improved but when you look closer, you realize his control was a problem, he doesn't have a strikeout pitch and his outings were all mid-week efforts. Staff just didn't trust him to be part of conference lineup. Wish him the best.

UCLA was playing with fire all year and it finally caught up to them.

Crazy how Northeastern, Milwaukee and South Dakota State (at least in game 1) fared pretty well in the tournament and the Gophers crushed them in the regular season. I know people are quick to point out that the Big Ten bids were dominated by the west coast teams but there was more parity in NCAA baseball than many people realize. It's the depth of the southern/west coast teams that make the difference.

...and Saint John's too...

And if David vs. Goliath wasn't enough of a reason to cheer for Milwaukee......:
