Per Mike:

14. P.J. Fleck, Minnesota

2025 Record: 8-5, Years at School: 10, Overall Record: 96-66

P.J. Fleck has brought a rare level of sustained stability to Minnesota, a program historically plagued by volatile coaching cycles. Racking up an 8–5 record in 2025, Fleck continues to cement his status as one of the most reliable program builders in Minneapolis history. His career highlights a remarkably consistent upward trajectory: across his nine seasons guiding the Golden Gophers, Fleck has maintained a .584 winning percentage (88–62) and secured five bowl victories. His blueprint relies heavily on time of possession control and disciplined mistake-free football, with Minnesota consistently ranking in the national top 25 for fewest penalties per game. By delivering reliable upper-tier finishes to a program that spent decades fluctuating in the basement of the conference, Fleck’s job security remains incredibly firm.

2. Luke Fickell, Wisconsin

2025 Record: 4-8, Years at School: 4, Overall Record: 80-45

Luke Fickell finds himself under immense scrutiny in Madison, where the transition away from the program’s traditional identity has resulted in severe underperformance. He carries a solid 80–45 overall career coaching record, largely built on his historic success at Cincinnati, but his tenure with the Badgers has been a major disappointment.

Since taking over in Madison, Fickell has stumbled to a highly uncharacteristic 17–21 record at Wisconsin. The fanbase and administration are growing increasingly impatient with an anemic offense and a noticeable regression in the trenches, areas that used to define the program’s identity. Backed by a high-profile hiring package, the expectations were for immediate Big Ten contention; instead, the continuous structural slide has left Fickell with almost no remaining margin for error heading into 2026.

Go Gophers!!

Locksley has been on the hot seat for years with Maryland but for whatever reason he never gets fired.

Looking at the list most of the seats are very cold, only the top couple are warm at all. I would have Fickell above Locksley in the #1 spot. Another down year for him and he is 1000% gone.

I'm convinced that Fickell will win at Wisconsin.

I don't agree with the writer that the Gophers are on an "upward trajectory." They're generally holding steady and neither improving nor declining. Eventually we'll have to deviate from this middle-of-the-pack trajectory.

It will not surprise me if the top-4 end up gone in mid-season, or, due to lower buyouts, after Dec 31.

For the Gophers, I feel like we're either going to be a pedestrian 6-6, or a helluva fun year with 9-3/10-2 dynamics.

GoGophers!

Fickel has to do poorly enough to raise money for the big buyout. 6 and 6 or 7-5 guessing he stays. I believe they have a new AD coming or hired? So he might clean house- but again only if they got the buyout money.

I think they'll likely improve in some regard but I don't see him getting them back to the consistent level they used to be at.
Nearly impossible to get to that level
2005-2019 10 10 win seasons in 15 years
2004-2019 15 8 win seasons in 16 years

For context, if you go 2019 and earlier the gophers need to go back to 1905 to have 15 8 win seasons.
The gophers have 6 10 win seasons in school history

They've got a new Prexy (Hi Wren) coming too. Lots of things for Bucky to navigate including more wins.

Honest question to the part in bold......Why?

He had a good run at Cincinnati while they were part of the American football conference but his 3 years at Wisconsin have gotten progressively worse record wise and his one other power 4 season was the only time Ohio State has finished below .500 in decades (there were other factors but he still lost a ton of games at a place that just doesn't lose many games).

In his defense he has had some bad luck in terms of QB injuries and what not but that isn't a team that has felt like they were on the verge of a breakthrough even with a healthy QB during his time there.

Fickell's career arc is looking an awful lot like Scott Frost's at the moment.

Fickell’s incoming recruiting class is less than stellar. I don’t see a big change this year…but do they rid themselves of Fickell knowing his 2027 class is shaping up nicely? including finally closing down the borders and securing almost their entire in-state talent. 8 of their top 10 in-state recruits have pledged their commitment to the program.

My hope is their season is another dumpster fire and they fire Fickell and the 2027 recruiting class falls to pieces.

Keeping a coach for a future recruiting class in this era seems foolish.

Yeah hot seat articles seem to just be raw speculation now or clickbait… not based on any actual knowledge.

I honestly think that idea is more often used as a sort of excuse more than the actual reason.

Maybe the folks making the call aren’t sure of making a good hire now / don’t want to pay a big buyout just yet so …. Yeah we’re gonna wait because recruiting….

No Oregon, Ohio State, Michigan or Indiana so he's got the schedule to recover. No chance against Notre Dame, likely L's against Penn State (yes, I know they're down), USC, Iowa and...Minnesota!

Fickell's career arc is looking an awful lot like Scott Frost's at the moment.

Why? Three reasons. Because he's an able coach, he's installing a new philosophy at Wisconsin, and they got better toward the end of last season.

As a Gopher fan, this comes to mind...

I know blue bloods can be ridiculous in how they turn over coaches and I know what happened to Franklin the season after a run in the CFP. But to have Lanning at #8 on this list just seems crazy to me.

Especially with Matt Campbell at #9. Much, much better chance PSU moves on from him than Oregon from Lanning. That hire seems like that Harsin guy going from Boise St to Auburn.

Same with Whittingham at Michigan.
