I work in the MN GBB/WBB community. I have talked to the players, their families, their coaches, and college coaches during my time in the job. I'm telling you now....hold onto the false hope all you would like, but they are not going to be Gophers. In 2028, names the fans should be looking at as realistic chances for Gophers are Logan Miller, Sahara Wilson, Ashna Ramlall, Maggie Dyer & Amelia Mills for in-state players. Not saying they get all or even any of these but these are the realistic targets for in-state recruiting.

Thank you, It seems strange to me that they wouldn’t consider the Gophers when they’re on the upward swing. If one or both joined the Gophers they would have a chance for the national title. Why the bias?

So accepting better pay is mercenary? The old days of someone picking the local school based on loyalty only are long gone. While I wish the local stars would all stay home, it's hard to criticize them for accepting more money to go to a more established program.

I understand what you’re saying but it would be great if someone would like the challenge of getting the Gophers to the top.
 



NIL money, wanting to get away from home (either near by or far away), a major they want that no one else offers and more. All come into the picture. That's never going to change - and all coaches face that in trying to recruit in 2026.

I thought the Good Ol Boy mentality was pretty much restricted to those red neck, low educated, areas of some of the southern states. Good to know that it's apparently alive and well in my homestate of Minnesota. Another good reason to want to leave to check out what other areas of the country have to offer. Gotta admit, that I'm a true-blue, dyed in the wool, full speed ahead fan of my Minnesota sports teams, but I've never been tempted to move back.

Heck, I even drove 6 hours and paid what I could not afford to spend, on a trip to Palm Desert last fall to watch them play terribly and lose a starter to injury. Even then, I wasn't tempted to jump ship and give up on them like so many others seemed to be willing do last November and December.

I was one of those who, when I got out of school, was 100% all-in on trying another area of the country to see if I could make it from scratch, completely on my own with no local or family contacts to lean on if things got tough. I can't blame other young kids for wanting to try the same thing. In fact, I usually advise 18-19 year olds that, unless you have a family-type commitment that requires that you remain close to home, the best thing you can do in your life is move to another part of the country, even if it's just for a year, to see and experience something different.

I usually agree with you but I think equating a die hard fan who hopes local stars show loyalty to the U with someone from "those red neck, low educated, areas of some of the southern states" is a little harsh. Some kids want to experience something new, others want to stay close to their friends and family. They all have the right to do what they want, and we should recognize that, whatever path they choose. Not just the one that aligns with our way of thinking.

You are probably right in most cases. However, the fact that Sid apparently wrote or said it, and I've seen some folks repeat it or agree with that sentiment over the past couple of years, indicates that the Good Ol Boy attitude does exist in some corners of this forum. Probably a minority, but the ones who feel that way really do a disservice to real fans (like you and I) who, of course would love to see local stars becoming Gopher players, but don't believe that those who choose to do something else should be shunned or somehow punished later in life just because they didn't choose to stay in Minn. That is very small-minded thinking in my opinion.

Wasn't referring to the potential recruits and the decisions they want to make. Was referring to the folks who actually believe or agree with the statement that if a recruit Minnesota wants decides to play somewhere else, they shouldn't be able to get a job in Minn.

We will know when a Gopher program is elite when people quit waiting for the Messiah from Menahga or Superman or Superwoman from Spicer and are excited to get a blue chip player from Podunk USA or the bowels of a big city.

Sid did say it, but I think he's probably the only one who actually believed it. Usually when I see that quote, it's tongue-in-cheek and a friendly jab at Sid.
 

Another one of Sid's standard go-to remarks after someone criticized pro sports in Mpls., was that without pro sports, we'd be a cold Omaha. I called in on one Sunday after he said that. I said I didn't want to be a cold Omaha, but wouldn't mind being a cold Lincoln. I got a chuckle out of Dave Moana for that one.

Anyone remember the first athlete that prompted Sid to make his won’t-get-a-job-in-Minnesota comment. Pretty sure he said that about John Alt, but that was circa 1980. Probably too late to be the first.

ESPN and Prospects Nation have recent rankings updates:

Amisha Ramlall - ESPN # 59, Prospects Nation - Elite 150 (falls out of top 60)
Mya Wilson - ESPN # 88, Prospects Nation # 57

Wilson's national rank and recruiting interest may have ticked down a little bit. Anyone with knowledge about her development and recruitment? As a sophomore thought she was on her way to a more elite recruiting profile.
