All Things Gopher Baseball

Why are we trying to steal 3rd with a left handed batter up (also the 9-hitter) with 2 outs? He's thrown out of course. Him being at 3rd would have done nothing. He still would have scored on a base hit from 2nd. Now we have Mosh leading off instead of Spanier. I'm really baffled by that.
Lot of freedom giving to runners on aggressiveness on the bases so I gotta think that is on Hellum, I'm with you just not worth the risk in that situation.

Bullpen was brutal today. I am not sure why Urban stayed in as long as he did. The Gophers had the bases full and knock out the starting pitcher, Huskers bring in a lefty and Hellum is left in and strikes out. I thought he should have been pinch hit for.

I had the exact same thought. I like that Hellum rewarded the start with the double (...and triple later), but I really thought they would pinch hit there with Cole or Akin.

Agree. I did see Gandossy talking to Hellum in the dugout after that half inning (not yelling or anything, but did appear to be talking about it).

This is longer than a college football halftime! Ridiculous.
I was at the game so I wasn't sure what they were checking, but thought it probably was whether the batter touched the safety bag or white bag as Goldy mentioned, but how can it that take so long...?. And my favorite part is the umps huddle up, come back to McDevitt to I guess say they can't/will not review (?), he says something, they huddle up again, and now they do decide to review it..???

Bummer...we looked to be in good shape and then their bats got going and we didn't have an answer.

Two more chances...flush that one and come back tomorrow.

Based on my quick glance at Sparty and Gophers records against what are currently the top 8 seeds, Gophers pretty much need to win 1 game against Huskers to clinch their spot. Sparty is 3-12 and Gophers would be 2-13.
If Gophers and MSU finish 11-19, Iowa finishing in the top 8 (+ ties) would help MSU, as Spartans were 2-1 vs. Iowa, the Gophers 1-2.

Does that sound right? I’m still trying to figure who gets the last spot (after Washington’s win tonight) if Gophers, MSU & Penn State all finish 11-19. Does Penn State have a chance?

The Gophers clinch final tournament spot with one win vs. Nebraska. If I'm understanding tiebreakers correctly, this is where we're at.

Big Ten Tournament seeds through Thursday, May 14 (top 4 bye to Friday single-elimination quarterfinals)

In the Hunt (note: not entirely sure about Penn State mathematically but including to be safe)
Michigan State (11-19) -- season complete

You shouldn't include Illinois at this time. If there's a 3-way tie for 12th spot and:
Iowa is 8th seed: Michigan State wins tie-breaker
Illinois is 8th seed: Penn State wins tie-breaker
Rutgers is 8th seed: Michigan State wins tie-breaker (I think...took a very quick glance)
Washington is 8th seed: Michigan State wins tie-breaker (I think....took a very quick glance)

....just win baby.

Confirming. … wouldn’t “top 8 +ties” (in the standings) include Illinois even though technically they’d be #9?

Morton left in the third with a “pop” in his elbow

Sigh

Edit: Neels with 1 AB at DH and replaced by Hellum

After those two games, I am not sure they deserve to go to Omaha. Those two bullpen performances are as bad as they get, outside of Sperry tonight.

I'm not sure you could draw up a worse way to lose.
Morton looks absolutely dominant and on his way to the best start of his career and leaves hurt
Neels exits after one at bat
Sperry is fantastic going 5+ strong but now done for the weekend
Offense was really solid manufacturing 6 runs and you go to the 9th with a 6-1 lead. I didn't mind sticking with Sperry and may have even given him one more batter. Jaenek hitting the first man felt like it added a ton of pressure but the pitch I really would like back is the 0-2 breaking ball he left up after getting two chases in the dirt. Didn't love going to Kruzan thought that would only be a scenario if it was multi inning, would've liked to see Whelan there. Thought we would see Carey get put on and give Whelan the left/left matchup with them loaded but he did get the grounder that Hamilton has to come up with.
I don't know what we roll out there tomorrow. Any chance it lightnings all day?

Whelan is Ricky Vaughn out there. As soon as they brought him in I said Huskers would tie it on a wild pitch. I was one batter off. They took the lead on a wild pitch. Absolutely horrendous. Program is so snake bitten

Probably the reason they didn’t trust putting Carey on and loading the bases like I thought they might for the left/left. I did think Hunt should’ve been more aggressive going after that slider though.

Patrick Ebert tweeted he thought Gophers were in by virtue of Penn St loss. Apparently some confusion if it goes to 1-8 win % or record against common B1G opponents.

Maybe it will be like the 2020 football season, where the league changes the rules once it realizes it doesn't like the outcome under the rules the season started with.

He has since deleted the tweet and now going with the win % against the top 8.

Hard to believe a week ago we led Michigan 5-0 with a chance to win the series and continue the story of a strong second half in the Big Ten baseball season. Now we’re limping to the finish line. At the risk of speaking apocryphally I fear there are not many more seasons to show improvement before Coyle shutters the program. Please talk me off the ledge—thank you.

The hiring of McDevitt is on him. That should speak volumes about how serious he takes the program. Need a national name that can recruit if you want to be a serious contender.

If you are talking serious contender like in the national tournament year in and year out you need to put a lot more scholarships into baseball, we are nowhere near the 34 you could give out if administration wanted too.
McDevitt and staff have certainly done well recruiting the state when you look at the group coming in that is their big class but you also will be replacing a ton of veterans of this years team.

Battled really hard especially after the rough start but just too many free bases today especially against a good team. This is a year that feels like the record should be much better than it ended up with the way they played for the majority of games.

Thanks for the insight. So then, why have a program to be mediocre or worse every year.

Very disappointing finish to the season. We were in position and just needed to win of the final 5 (all at home). Instead, another year with no conference tourney.

This team underachieved and that is very disappointing. They lose a lot of upper classman and it will be interesting to see who leaves/arrives with the portal. Desperate need for a catcher to replace Neels/Hunt. Currently nobody on roster plays that position.

Just so many close losses, had to be like 5-15 in 1 or 3 run games. They played a lot of good baseball but that didn’t always lead to the result. The situational hitting those first 3 weeks of conference play were killer.

Thinking about the tiebreaker more why the hell would you use record against top 8 instead of common opponents? Common opponents at least it’s an even playing field, record against top 8 could be very unbalanced results. People that run Big Ten baseball have never been accused of being the smartest.

I saw softball used the same tiebreaker except it was top 12 (+ ties), which would match the tournament field and also give a larger set of results to compare. I have no idea why they chose 8.

Coach McDevitt mentioned on some podcast I think he wanted the team to be one that hit home runs, stole bases, could pitch and was sound defensively. One could argue they checked a lot of those boxes. They finished the conference 6th in HRs, T5th in SBs, 5th in ERA, 4th in WHIP, 5th in BAA, 8th in FldPct. We were +14 in run differential...and yet it all added up to an 11-19 record. 🤷‍♂️

Execution late in games. Few different times we had runner on 3rd less than 2 out either down by 1 or tied late in a conference game and couldn't score him, just a few weeks ago at Penn State I think it was Hellum got on Spanier showed bunt got a wild pitch to get Hellum to 2nd, Spanier bunted him to 3rd and Hamilton and Neels had shots to tie it but couldn't get the job done.
