Tate Wallace Commits to the Gophers

No offer from Iowa which is surprising?

He was Iowa's first choice, and Iowa is pissed they didn't get him.

Now we can all move on.
I'm in no way plugged into the Iowa recruiting scene but a 4* recruit from Iowa City without an Iowa or Iowa State offer makes me think he made it clear he wasn't staying in state.

Tate’s older brother plays football at St. Thomas. I’m sure it’s convenient for the parents to have both kids at college/playing football within 20 minutes of each other.

Also, fun fact: both Pierce Walsh and Matt Kingsbury also have brothers who play football at St. Thomas
Odd recruiting side benefit to having UST go Division I? Some parents get to two-fer.

Fleck's raised the recruiting profile of the program so much that fans are borderline plotting murder against one another over a 4 star commitment. What a time to be alive!
I think the bar has risen due to the portal. Your blue loods have a choice to make. Sign proven players or sign higher rated recruits... They are taking the portal players knowing they can offer someone like tate $$$$ down the road if he proves himself

Do you mean "the portal" or NIL? One kinda existed before the other. If you strictly mean just the portal, then there isn't much data, as it opened after our 2018 class. But that class alone was something different. Dunlap, Faalele, Batemen, etc. Way better than what we were used too, 2 guys from IMG.

In 2019, right after the portal we got a 4* DT from Georgia. Daniel Jackson, Jah Joyner, Michael Dixon and someone from IMG the following year. I think the portal was too new to be the reason for these recruiting successes.

I like it, #1 player Mn, ND, and #2 player in IA all going to MN

No need to be obtuse about it. Iowa not offering is significant given their track record of talent identification and development.

This could be as simple as Iowa had other players higher on their board. Teams do not use 247 or Rivals to direct their recruiting strategy. I will also say that two of Iowa’s earliest commitments were LBs, so perhaps they addressed that need early in the cycle. The third kid (Van Maanen) was just recently offered and quickly committed. He fits a similar physical profile to Wallace and perhaps was just a luxury add for them given they already had 2 LBs committed.

Also, Iowa typically offers 100-150 kids a cycle, which is a small number in comparison to several other schools. They show greater discernment for who they offer and don’t throw them out like candy. For example, in the 2027 class, Minnesota has offered 283 kids, Wisconsin has offered 364, Iowa has offered 129. Point being, they don’t automatically offer every kid they’re interested in recruiting

On the other hand, Iowa may very well have tried to recruit Tate and he told them he wanted to be further from home? If the kid’s HS is 3-4 miles from Kinnick Stadium, then that is very plausible. And doesn’t that sound familiar? Like every other player from the Minnesota metro wanting to get further from home. It’s not necessarily an indictment on the player or the hometown school and could end up benefitting Minnesota!

Like PJ, Ferentz and company are persnickety when it comes to recruiting. Ferentz has passed over time on a number of high-rated Iowa kids or legacy kids. Some of those passed-over players have had good careers, some not. That’s recruiting. Also, as near as I can tell from reading speculation on Iowa boards, passing on Wallace was a football evaluation/numbers game, not a character evaluation.

Yeah these are always difficult to know but I assume every school gets some hard “no” responses for any number of reasons and they don’t bother wasting time after that.

He must not have heard about Drake's fake id... ;)

I'm worried that he's a bust just because Iowa didn't offer. Iowa is probably the best school at identifying lower defensive talent and if they didn't offer on a decent talent, it makes me worried that he ain't going to pan out.

Nothing like passing judgement on a recruit before he even sets foot on campus as a Gopher.

Likely told Iowa not to offer as he wants to get away from home to play. Growing up in Iowa City, most would want to leave after 18 years there

Class of 2027 also.

Maybe just a little early to pull the plug.
Yeah, especially in a sport like football where it often takes guys multiple years to reach their full potential when the come in out of high school.

I mean sure....that could make sense....but that would require looking for the positive angle on why something is happening and that is just too much for some people. Easier to just assume the worst. :)

In what world are we considering a 4 ⭐ recruit that held offers from Notre Dame, Tennessee, and Nebraska among other P4 schools lower defensive talent?

The funny thing is if this kid was from MN no one would even consider if Iowa offered or not.
