All Things Gopher Baseball

They didn't even call it interference they said he just got back to the base with no tag. The attrocious part is that has to be called out of the baseline. These are the same guys who missed the bunt tipping off the batter as well though that led to a 3 run inning.
Would have liked to see Hamilton be more aggressive with that 3-1 pitch. The homerun robbery of Neels was big.
They didn't call interference? I was watching on mute.

I stand corrected. I saw the safe call from the 3rd base ump when the runner initially went for the contact but from someone who would certainly know they did call interference.

I was at the game and didn't realize they had called interference and thought they had just said he got back to the base safe. That is absolutely brutal.

The runner literally jumped 2 feet out of the baseline and raised his arms to initiate contact with Hamilton. It was atrocious

UCLA loses their first B10 game of the year after starting 25-0

Longest winning streak since Illinois from 1909 - 1911

Bats couldn't get going most of the game. Michigan had some insane luck with those three weak singles in a row in the 2nd but took advantage and made sure to bring them all in. Selvig really struggled after that. Comeback attempt falls late.
One win against Nebraska gets us in, looked at tiebreak scenarios a little and they seem to be a headache.

“With the first seven months of the BASEketball postseason out of the way, the playoff picture is now starting to emerge.
So, with last night's victory over Boston, next week the Beers must beat Indianapolis in order to advance to Charlotte. That's in an effort to reduce their magic number to three.”

“Right, and then the Beers can advance to the National Eastern Division North to play Tampa.”

So, if the Beers beat Detroit and Denver beats Atlanta in the American Southwestern Division East Northern, then Milwaukee goes to the Denslow Cup, unless Baltimore can upset Buffalo and Charlotte ties Toronto, then Oakland would play LA and Pittsburgh in a blind choice round robin. And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, the two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned”

B1G weekend recap
Michigan beats Gophers 2-1. I'm still really annoyed by Saturday's loss. Gophers were every bit equals with Michigan this weekend.

Illinois sweeps Northwestern 3-0. Dominating weekend for the Illini as they outscore NW 26-6. Illinois has clinched, Northwestern is eliminated.

Purdue sweeps Indiana 3-0. A much needed sweep for the Boilers as they remain firmly on the NCAA bubble. They also are tied with Oregon (and trail USC by 1 game) for a top-4 seed.

Nebraska sweeps Iowa 3-0. Big bounceback for the Huskers. They are a completely different team at home vs road. (15-0 vs 5-7). Thankfully the Gophers get them at Siebert.

Rutgers beats Maryland 2-1. Maryland is eliminated. Rutgers in that 3-way tie for the last spot.

Ohio State beats Michigan State 2-1. Sparty is done with conference play with a record of 11-19. Will need one of the other teams above them to get swept and then hope for some tie-breakers.

UCLA beats Oregon 2-1. Bruins finally receive a blemish on their conference record.

Penn State beats Washington 2-1. Huskies are just bad. Also part of that 3-way tie.

USC sweeps Nevada 3-0

In my opinion:
In the NCAA's: UCLA, Nebraska, USC, Oregon (UCLA and USC will host)
On NCAA Bubble: Michigan, Purdue (Michigan is close to being that last 4 team in. Purdue likely on outside still)

B1G Schedule next weekend
Nebraska (20-7) at Minnesota (11-16) - Big series for the Gophers as they need 1 win to clinch a spot in B1G tournament. Barring an epic collapse, Nebraska is pretty firm in receiving a top 4 seed.

Illinois (13-14) at Indiana (7-20) - Nothing at stake here. Disappointing season for Hoosiers, who were decimated by the injury bug. I expect them back next season.

Purdue (18-9) at Iowa (12-15) - Iowa is in and just playing for seed. Boilers are playing for their tournament life. Big weekend for them.

Penn State (8-19) at Maryland (7-20) - Penn State needs a sweep and them one of the teams above them to get swept (I'm looking at you Huskies). Very disappointing year for Terps, who are usually towards the top. Not sure what happened there.

Ohio State (15-12) at Michigan (17-10) - Wolverines with an outside chance of earning a top 4 seed should they get a sweep. Lots at stake in this one.

Rutgers (11-16) at Northwestern (7-20) - Of all the teams tied for the last spot, Rutgers has the most favorable schedule.

USC (19-8) at Oregon (18-9) - Series of the week as both clubs are looking to earn that top 4 seed. USC still has hopes for hosting.

UCLA (26-1) at Washington (11-16) - Tough way to end the season for the Huskies. Will be interesting to see what their chances are if they get swept.

BIG TEN BASEBALL TOURNAMENT TIEBREAKER PROCEDURE
The following tiebreaker procedure will be utilized for the 2026 Big Ten Baseball Tournament:
• Two-Team Tie
o If the tied teams have not played each other as part of the conference schedule, move to the next step in the tiebreaker process. If the teams played each other as part of the conference schedule, the winner of the game or series of the games between the tied teams shall automatically qualify for the tournament and/or earn the higher seed.
o If the teams are still tied, the team with the best winning percentage against all teams ending the season (tied or not) in positions 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 shall automatically qualify for the tournament and/or earn the higher seed.
o If the teams are still tied, the team with the best overall RPI, per warrennolan.com at the conclusion of NCAA Baseball competition on the Saturday prior to the start of the conference tournament, shall automatically qualify for the tournament and/or earn the higher seed.

• Three or More Team Tie

Based on my quick glance at Sparty and Gophers records against what are currently the top 8 seeds, Gophers pretty much need to win 1 game against Huskers to clinch their spot. Sparty is 3-12 and Gophers would be 2-13.

If Washington and Gophers end up tied, both swept for instance, Gophers have the tie breaker with them. Hopefully UCLA sweeps them.

The only 2-team tie Minnesota can have for the final spot is with Sparty, since they are already at 11 wins. If Minnesota and Washington both get swept then it's a 3-way tie. Sparty's record against the top 8 seeds is 3-12, Minnesota would be 2-14 and Washington would be 4-11. We'd be eliminated by virtue of worst record against top 8 seeds.

So the only way in is the Gophers win a game?
What do you think the chances are of that?

Good chance IMHO. Nebraska is 15-0 at home but away from LIncoln their conference record is 5-7.
2-1 at Michigan
1-2 at Oregon
2-1 at Illinois
0-3 at Ohio State

They have yet to sweep a road series and the Gophers have been playing teams tough.

Thursday's game has been moved up to 2pm due to forecasted storms in the late afternoon/evening. Friday is at 5pm. Both were slated to be televised on BTN but with Thursday's start moving up I'm not sure if that is still the case.

Looks like BTN is still televising today's game.

Weather looks pretty good overall this weekend, with wind and chance of rain later today being the worst of it.

Let's get the conference tourney drought monkey off our backs and take care of business early. Get it done! Go Gophers!

Interesting decision to go with Hellum at DH today. He's 4 for 24 on the season. Well 4 for 25 now as he struckout with a runner in scoring position in the 2nd.

McDevitt does the weirdest challenges....and they never work. Nebraska gets a leadoff single and then bunts him over to 2b. The throw to first was inside the baseline so Bello had to make a nice reach to get it but the runner collided with him. McDevitt challenged the collision. I'm presuming he wants the Nebraska batter to be tossed. To me it looked like a bang-bang play. Certainly not worth holding up the game for the last 20+ minutes and getting your pitcher cold. Move on and play ball. They called the batter out.

This is longer than a college football halftime! Ridiculous.

....but he makes up for it with a double to the gap in the 4th to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead. Nice!

Why are we trying to steal 3rd with a left handed batter up (also the 9-hitter) with 2 outs? He's thrown out of course. Him being at 3rd would have done nothing. He still would have scored on a base hit from 2nd. Now we have Mosh leading off instead of Spanier. I'm really baffled by that.

Selvig pulled after 4 innings and only 56 pitches. Can't help but think the delay had something to do with that. Now the bullpen risks being stretched all weekend.

Bullpen blows a 4-1 lead. Some reason Sperry was the third out of the bullpen. Trailing 4-8 now. Can't help but think we blew our chance. Some head scratching decisions for sure

I think he was looking to bring the runner back to 1st as it is supposed to be called interference if the runner doesn't hit the orange base and hits the white base instead, no idea why it took so long when the replay clearly showed the runner only hitting the white base and then sticking with the call. Think that type of play is supposed to be cut and dry point of emphasis if you don't touch right bag. Only thing I can think is video equipment was having problems, but still ridiculous to go that long and stick with call on the field.

The 0-2 breaking ball from Gregory that found the elbow really was a big swing. Urban coming in and really struggling had to be very unexpected.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Kruzan out of the pen tomorrow after Morton if we are up a few runs.
