Gopher Softball 2026

A coaching change is 100% needed. Go find some upcoming assistant to take over. Any staff with D1 knowledge would do better than the current staff regardless of what money is available.

If a change is made, I would think a Big 10 job would attract interest in a sport dominated by the power conferences.

Coyle better be brushing up on his Zoom interviewing skills.

Piper is a classic case of the Peter Principle.

Awesome pitching coach who couldn't handle the Head Coaching job.

Retain 1 or 2 and clean slate for the rest would be fine. .238 team average 4.82 team ERA doesn't cut it
Gotta think there would be a market for Werner and Schwartz maybe Burnett, but do they go somewhere else? who knows.

A nationwide search will start immediately for Minnesota's next head coach
University of Minnesota Thomas O. Moe Director of Athletics Mark Coyle has announced that the University has parted ways with softball head coach Piper Ritter.

Statement from Mark Coyle

"I want to thank Piper for dedicating more than 20 years to the Gopher softball program as a player, assistant coach and head coach. She coached and developed some of the best pitchers and players in program history.

"However, the program has taken a step back in the last three years and a new voice is needed. We wish Piper all the best in the future.

"We will immediately begin a nationwide search for our next head coach."

Go Gophers!!

> The people he might be after are hopefully still playing.
One name that might be on Coyle's list is not only still playing, but is on campus this week (...Omaha head coach Mike Heard...)

Sounds like a good idea, but he signed a multi-year extension last May.

I did see that, but the article I read didn't list his salary/terms...(...but yes, that could make non-feasible).

Piper had to have known, there was so much writing on the walls that it covered the entire house.

I just hope the next coach keeps Autumn around. A proven winner who can help the pitching staff. A legend of the program.
Very unlikely. I’m sure the next coach will have his or her own coaches in mind, and even if one of those isn’t available or doesn’t want to make the move, knows other coaches that would be next up. Unless the new coach already knows and is comfortable with Autumn.

As far as being a legend of the program, Piper is already right up there with other legends, and has proven her ability to churn out AA pitchers as the pitching coach, so if I’m the new coach and she wanted to stay in that reduced role, I’d consider that before I considered retaining Autumn.

Not doubting you as I am not close to the program, but why?
I'm guessing they would want someone that actually wants to be a coach. Just because someone has played doesn't mean they can be a good coach, nor does it mean they want to be a coach.

So what names are we hearing? Or what names are we hoping to hear? Will the go national, in region etc? Does a summit league or D2 get the call?

Interested to see what direction Coyle takes here. Hopefully candidates are playing in the NCAA tournament.

If the pattern of replacing a coach with no prior D-I head coaching experience with a coach who has proven they can win at the D-I level, albeit in a conference notch below the B1G level (see PJ Fleck, Niko Medved, Dawn Plitzuweit), whoever it is will likely be playing in the D-I NCAA softball tournament this week but probably won’t make super-regionals.

Any rumblings yet? Hopefully the next coach is still playing. Could Coyle go after South Dakota coach. They did get a tourney win today.
