Gopher Hockey Recruiting

my expectation is any coach of the gophers makes the tournament. I view that as a contender. I'd assume pretty much every blue blood would say the exact same. He gets a little more leeway given it's year one and Bob left him no intact D core, but this is not Gopher football and year 0 a la PJ and kids want to come here. Of the blue bloods, who helpfully have hired a lot of coaches in the modern era, in year one with the prior year results

Michigan: Naurato FF (Pearson FF)
Wisco: Hastings NCAA tourney regional semis (Granato 13-23)
UND: Jackson FF (Berry 18-15 and missed tourney)
DU: no new coach in the modern era but Carle made a FF in his first year after Monty lost in the regional finals
BC: Brown missed tourney (prior year York missed tourney)
BU: Pandolfo FF (OConnell 19-13-1 and missed tourney)

So yeah at the blue bloods the expectation is to make the tourney. Little different prior to the last 3 or so years when you had to build more slowly over time. That need is gone
Most people would say you have to have more than a slight statistical chance to win it to be considered an actual contender. Just check the pre tournament Vegas odds if you don’t believe me.

Citing national title betting odds as a take is certainly an interesting one because I am willing to bet the Gophers are in the top 10 in betting odds and the team that almost won as the last 3 seed was given about a 4% chance (DU was 9%) pre NCAA tournament. The autos this year were the only ones who were 1% or less. Last year you had a PSU team who scraped into the tournament as a 4 get to the FF and of course we all remember the year Duluth snuck in and won it all. Add that to that if MN makes the tourney, we will absolutely have inflated betting odds because of name brand.

100% helps to get an upper seed, don't get me wrong, but college hockey/one and done nature no one is counted out.

As they are currently constructed I don't think so
I wouldn’t put them there either nor would I expect them to be in polling but LV had us as a top 5 team last year preseason as well as middle of the pack to win the title halfway through the year

Vegas is not dumb. For all we know they like to have Minnesota show up "in the mix" because they get more bets for us than all the other little schools that are better teams so it's better than putting us at 1000:1 and "off the page".

Yes, lightning does indeed strike. However, around 85% of national champions have been a 1 or 2 seed. You need to be in the top 8 to be considered a realistic contender.

Very fair opinion to have. I’ll keep mine as make a tournament and I view you are a contender to win a title

Hence why I wouldn’t Vegas odds really ever to decide who I think is most likely to win a title in a sport like college hockey that gets so little media and gambling action.

Hell there was minimal action on it while we were down there despite them hosting

I can tell you that team ain't gonna be great, you can let it play out like people let this last season play out that I told you was coming.
You don't know what is coming either. Nobody does until we see the full roster for next year. It's not set yet. And all your angst isn't going to help.

My angst doesn't hurt the coach's recruiting efforts with not enough NIL to get the top players he needs to salvage the roster.

No, it doesn't hurt. Doesn't help either. You probably should give some more to NIL.

He can come next year maybe but we need centers
agreed 100%. Does not move the needle for next year. Would rather he play another year of junior before coming here. 93rd among NA skaters which I'd envision is more off his frame than his production

Definitely need a center right now, but I’ve heard this kid has the potential to be a monster down the road. I think next year in juniors he could take a huge leap in production and end up being a great pickup if he comes in 27-28.

He can take Katz or Jarvis spot. Need ultra high end guys, though, too.

Wyatt Cullen is so damn good. If he would’ve played more hockey this year I’m convinced he would’ve made a serious push for being picked top 5. There are now insiders saying it would not shock them if he went top 10. Growth spurt definitely turned a bunch of eyes too.

2027-28
Cullen (JR) - Cullen (FR) - Mooney (SR)

Probably not as dominant as PlanteX3 will be, but could have a Knies-Cooley-Snuggerud impact on games.

That’s my biggest hope having Joey coming is Wyatt will give us 3 years. He’s exploded on the scene and that line could absolutely be as dominant as Duluth hopes the triple plante line is

Well, if Joey truly is a threat for the #1 overall pick like some have suggested, it’s possible he comes on campus a year earlier. Would obviously have to have a dominant year in juniors next year. Wouldn’t buy that though.

That line 100% would be as good as the Plante line.

You seem to be sure of many things... 2/3 of the Plante line has already show absolute dominance as a line. Above hypothetical line has one combined year of NCAA data. Plus you don't know how line chemistry will be.

I meant to say could, not would

To your other point, I'd put it under 1% that Cullen comes in after one year at NTDP. He is super raw and skinny.

i would not remotely call him raw. Vision/anticipation is one of his biggest strong suits and his skating is very solid with ability to change pace to dictate play. There's a reason when playing age-similar comp he's dominated.

that said, he'll play 2 years at the NTDP or there was no point in going there in the first place unless he's completely obliterating everyone, which would be really unlikely. Had he gone the CHL route, that had a greater chance of happening but he'll get tons of games and have all the resources at hand for the NTDP too

Sounds like the Cullen at U18 might have made a bad play resulting in a goal in the embarrassing loss?
