B1G weekend recap
Gophers sweep Northwestern 3-0. Dominant pitching performances as the Gophers give up only 6 runs on the weekend and suddenly find themselves back in contention for the final spot in the conference tournament.
Nebraska beats Illinois 2-1. After a setback on Friday threatened to derail their weekend, Huskers take the final 2 and avert what would have been a devastating outcome for their hopes of hosting a regional.
Iowa sweeps Indiana 3-0. Gotta admit I was a little surprised by this outcome as Iowa goes on the road and destroys the Hoosiers by outscoring them 28-8 on the weekend. I’m on record as being very disappointed that Minnesota didn’t win the series in Iowa…I guess this shows that I should be even more disappointed that we dropped 2 of 3 to Hoosiers. I think Gophers are better than both teams…but I guess the records don’t lie.
Michigan State beats Maryland 2-1. Disappointing weekend for the Terps as they desperately needed to win this series in order to play themselves in the conference tournament. They will need A LOT of help now
Michigan beats Washington 2-1. The Huskies are starting to get exposed. They still have 2 incredibly tough weekends ahead of them and could easily slip out of the Big Ten tournament.
Oregon sweeps Penn State 3-0. It wasn’t pretty as the first 2 victories were 1-run games but the Ducks get their first sweep since the Indiana series in March. Penn State has a pretty easy schedule (MN, WAS, at MD) but they might be too far back. They need get some sweeps.
USC sweeps Purdue 3-0. Ooof. Tough series for Boilers. The sweep not only knocks them out of the top 4 for the conference but it also lowers their RPI to 65. They still have time, and the Big Ten tournament to improve their resume but this was a big blow to their NCAA chances.
Rutgers beats Ohio State 2-1. Buckeyes have to be disappointed in going 1-5 the last 2 weekends. Both teams are in the conference tournament now but need to keep their eye on the rear-view mirror. Objects may be closer than they appear.
UCLA beats Sacramento State 2-1. Bruins are still the #1 team in the NCAA.
In my opinion:
In the NCAA's: UCLA, Nebraska, USC, Oregon (UCLA will host; Nebraska/USC with a chance to host)
On NCAA Bubble: Michigan, Purdue (At this point I think both are going to be one of the first teams out)
