All Things Gopher Baseball

With bases loaded and 1 out in top of 2nd there was a 20 minute delay.
Washington coach talked to home plate ump
Home plate ump conferred with all umps
Home plate ump and another ump conferred with Washington coach
Home plate ump and another ump go into GOphers dugout and actually pull out rule book
Umps all confer with McDevitt.
Umps call a balk on previous pitch (20 minutes ago)

Replay doesn't show anything obvious for a balk. Completely unacceptable to hold up the game that long and make the pitcher go ice cold.

That whole sequence was so weird. Ump crew deserves plenty of blame for it and so does the bitch Washington coach. I'm still not sure you can actually review for a balk and go back and call it, seems kinda like reviewing a check swing.
Washington then challenged a very obvious ball that hit off the wall and you could hear Coach McDevitt and staff going at the Washington coach about the previous review.

Admittedly I don't know the declaration rule very well, but I don't understand how a review can take that long. That was absolutely absurd.

Gophers finally get a Big 10 win at home as they break open a close game with long balls. Jaenke and Capamaccio with good work in relief.
After two years it's great to win a conference game at Siebert. Kudos to Akin for his first HR to go along with a double. He had a great game.

No Martin today. He's had a difficult sophomore campaign but I hope he can turn it around.

Game in a rain delay. Too bad they bothered to start it because Kruzan looked good for two scoreless. I'm guessing Gregory gets the ball if they resume

I didn't think it was too heavy and thought they'd just play through it. McDevitt was having a long talk with umps before BTN+ went away from the field and I almost wonder if he was saying we knew we were gonna be dealing with some lite rain why stop the game now, if you didn't want to play in rain the game should never had been started.

Gophers up 5-4 after 7. Unfortunately we've made 4 outs on the base paths tonight. Hamilton getting picked off 2nd with Neels at bat was especially inexcusable.

If we lose this it's our own fault.

Both dugouts have been chirping extra loud at one another. You can tell there is no love lost after yesterday.

Big win and much needed, thought Sperry and Urban were really good. Little unlucky at the plate tonight with a number of hard hit balls finding gloves but came through with big two strike hits. I'm still not sure what exactly the ruling is on the strikeout that went inside Neels chest protector and he threw the guy out being ruled a dead ball I guess?

Definitely didn't feel like a series where two programs have only played like three times. Very intense and lot of fun.

I looked it up and unfortunately they got it right. If the ball gets logged in catcher or umpire equipment on a dropped strike the batter gets first automatically.

I was a bit surprised they didn't move of start time up more (11 or noon), given the forecast. Just seemed like they ended up starting the game before the window of rain.

Good to get that win and series, especially with how chippy it got.

It actually looked like Hamilton might have been out in front on the go ahead double, but he got the barrel to it and CF seemed shifted opposite field a bit. After the horrible start to game 1, hitting was better to finish the series. Good to see Urban have a strong outing (those sliders looked nasty).

B1G weekend recap
Gophers took 2 of 3 from Washington - Finally a series win for the Maroon & Gold. Is this the start of a baseball rivalry between McDevitt & Eddie Smith?

Maryland took 2 of 3 from Indiana - Extremely disappointing season for both teams

USC swept Iowa 3-0 - Iowa is not good. Still annoyed we lost that series cause I'm convinced Gophers are a better team.

Michigan took 2 of 3 from Michigan State - Mich could have really used a sweep there but couldn't close the deal on Sunday. As a bubble team that's the type of game they need to win.

Oregon took 2 of 3 from Nebraska - Terrific series. Every game decided by 1 or 2 runs. Was fun to watch.

Purdue swept Northwestern 3-0 - Boilers had 2 come from behind wins. Big sweep for them as a bubble team and yes, they have a chance to earn a bye in B1G tournament.

Ohio State took 2 of 3 from Penn State - Ohio State just continues to pile up quiet victories.

UCLA swept Rutgers 3-0 - An amazing 14 inning affair on Friday that saw UCLA record 30 strikeouts (1 shy of NCAA record) and issue only 1 walk. Amazing pitching performance.

Illinois took 2 of 3 from New Orleans

In my opinion:
In the NCAA's: UCLA, Nebraska, USC, Oregon (UCLA will host; Nebraska, Oregon and USC have a chance to host)
On NCAA Bubble: Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan (I hesitate to put Ohio State cause they are a super long-shot but they have won 8 of last 9 conf games. They still have a chance to improve their RPI)

B1G Schedule next weekend
Minnesota (5-10) at UCLA (18-0) – UCLA is not only 18-0 but 13 of their wins have been by 5 runs or more. Simply amazing. Gophers goal is to find a way to sneak out 1 win.

Oregon (10-5) at Illinois (7-8) – Ducks earned a huge series win against the Huskers but they just can’t seem to generate any sweeps yet. I’m thinking this weekend is no different and Illinois finds a way to win a game. 2 wins is not out of the question for Illini.

Maryland (4-11) at Iowa (5-10) – There are 8 teams vying for the final 2 spots in conference tournament and both these teams are part of that logjam.

Northwestern (5-10) at Michigan (7-8) – Michigan needs a sweep here if they want to make the NCAA’s. Purdue just swept the Kats and proved it could be done.

Michigan State (6-12) at Washington (7-8) – Not impressed with either team from what I’ve seen. Still have no idea how Washington is a 500 team in conference. Although to be fair, Huskies fielding was superb this weekend.

USC (13-5) at Nebraska (12-3) – Doesn’t get any easier for Huskers this weekend. If it’s anything like their series against the Ducks, try and tune in on BTN+ for one of these.

Ohio State (9-6) at Purdue (12-6) – A surprisingly pivotal matchup between 2 teams that have very quietly put together an NCAA tournament resume. Crazy.

Rutgers (5-10) at Penn State (4-11) – Rutgers played UCLA really tough. Part of it was likely attributed to the timezone difference. Neither of these teams has much but they are part of that 8-team pileup in the standings.

Good effort last night but one inning just got away from Selvig. It didn't help matters that the ump decided to tighten the zone for a couple key pitches that inning. Much more difficult to pitch from behind than ahead. Oh well. Let's hope Morton has his stuff today.

BTN had good coverage. Wish they'd showcase baseball more.

Definitely thought he got squeezed there a little, the leadoff hit by pitch was just a killer. Had a couple chances to come through with another one of those two out RBI hits like Sutherland did to get the lead but couldn't find another.

Whelan comes in with bases loaded, nobody out and 3-4-5 hitter up...and proceeds to get out of it with no runs.

Don't know how this game will end (currently up 1-0) but dang that was impressive.

Man...Allen almost beat out an IF hit. Looked safe to me but no challenge so must not have been. Bello robbed of a HR at the wall. Mosh has a double down the line ruled foul.

Game of inches....

Hit batsman with 2 outs opens the door for the go ahead runs. UCLA is just too good to make mistakes against. The Gophers have been robbed on a couple of homeruns. They have certainly hit the ball hard.

Ty mentioned after the game that he should have pulled Cole a little earlier.
