Don't be surprised if Mikkelsen ends up being more of a WR and essentially a slightly bigger version of Tyler Johnson. When Tyler was at Minn he was 6'2" and 205, while Mikkelsen comes in at 6'5" and 205. We all know how much damage Tyler did while in the slot going up against less athletic LBs (just look at Auburn game), and as mentioned, Mikkelsen does have that track speed. So, maybe you don't focus on him bulking up with the TE's but instead focus more on the speed and route running. If you look at his film, he does a lot of his receiving damage out of the slot. So, maybe this makes sense if they don't see him as a traditional TE with his athletic skillset.

So a Ben Utecht type TE?

If you watched some Indiana games, you probably remember their no. 3 receiver, Charlie Becker, who really came into his own as the season progressed. Dominant near the season's end in big games. He is 6'4", 205 and very fast--and won contested balls more often than not. Mikklesen might have that kind of potential, if the Gophs work with him on speed and route running rather than bulking up.

The Dakotas remain Gopher country.
There were probably some before these guys, but the first I recall from North Dakota were Mark Slater, Minot; Doug Beaudoin, Jamestown and Kirby Kuklinski, Whapeton, and later Eslinger from Bismarck. IIRC we have also had Joe Salem from Sioux Falls and Michael Hunt from Watertown, SD. So yes, the Dakotas have been good to us. Go Gophers!

If we are talking about the 1970s LB Michael Hunt, he was an Ortonville (MN) high school grad. After a radio gaffe, I believe Ray Christensen began referring him to Michael as opposed to Mike.

You are correct on both points. Yes, I recall the second oneo_O. We did have a player from Watertown around that time though IIRC.

The only So Dak miss by Minn that I lament was when Iowa got Chad Greenway. Greenway was a monster for Iowa from 2003 - 05. When these conversations come up, I think of 03 when Mase had Maroney, Barber, and Tapeh. We lost to Michigan by 3 that year after we rushed for 424 yds, which I unfortunately witnessed live. If Greenway was at middle LB, that comeback never happens.

Going back a bit further, Fargo's Barry Mayer put up over 1,800 rushing yards in his three years with the Gophers. Hard-nosed between the tackles runner. Same backfield as Jim Carter for two years.

You must be new to this board. We don't mention certain things around here due to it inducing trama...

We've overlooked the Fargo Flash Justin Conzemius on our list of recruiting success in the Dakotas.

Mason was recruiting JJ Watt to be a tight end. Greenway would have likely been put on offense as well.
