announcers - favorites

Beth Mowins.
I'll always remember the 2012-2014 Jerry Kill Gophers and how Beth Mowins & Joey Galloway practically called every non BTN game they played.

I never thought Mowins was great, but I do think she got a bad rap due to Pam Ward having been before her & being MUCH MUCH worse at the job. Mowins was far superior to Ward & I think they kind of get thought of in the same basket.

When I lived in South Carolina I could get Georgia games on the radio. Larry Munson was pretty good but a big time homer. He's from Mpls so some oldtimers might remember him. South Carolina's former announcer, Bob Fulton was solid, but current play-by-play announcer and former SC QB Todd Ellis is weak.

Ask @Jack jones

Are we talking worst announcers? Because if you put her and Paul Allen together I think you would have the two worst ever! I think PA is trying to capture Kevin Harlan when the only one who should do that is Harlan. Remember his best one “with no regard for human life!!!” I’m no Packers fan but I think Wayne Larivee is excellent, but his color guy is as bad…no check that, worse than PA’s homerism.
Larivee is one of the best in the business. I'm no Packer fan either, but he's a total pro.

PA is an untrained hack who fell into the job because he worked for the station and would work cheap. He's also a terrible person who hangs out with terrible people.

McDonough for me cemented a place on the podium with the Ole Miss Georgia CFP 2025 game . For those of us fortunate enough to watch it was one of craziest second halves I’ve ever personally witnessed with multiple insane athletic plays and a perfect narration from Sean throughout. It was viewing perfection and the droll delivery occasionally peaking into shades of excitement.

I miss Grinnin Glen on BTN.
McDonough is gifted.

One of my favorites was Al Shaver calling North Star games... the "Golden Voice"...

His description of a good hockey fight as a "lively scrap" was always hilarious!

I like Paul Allen.

Jesse the Body Ventura doing Vikings (and Tampa Bay Bucs) games was interesting.

Halsey Hall and Herb Carneal, with Sid Hartman doing some of the pre-game show, were great.

Also really liked John Gordon during the Twins' World Series era.

Dan Gladden is excellent.

Bob Uecker was very good.

Gus Johnson... great.
Sean McDonough... great, especially when his voice cracked while doing the Michigan flubbed punt against Michigan State.

Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy.... a great team in the NFL and CFB booth, especially for the Orange Bowl on New Year's evening.

Vin Scully... Brooklyn/L.A. Dodgers was great.

Myron Cope and the Terrible Towel (y)(y)

Curt Gowdy (y) (y)

Enberg was great.

Dick Enberg had several great partnerships, but I thought the one with Merlin Olsen was especially outstanding.

I remember the legend more than the team, but for hoops, Enberg-Billy Packer-Al McGuire was certainly entertaining. Quite a crew with Enberg as a steady and guiding force.

We grew up with Enberg and Merlin - I loved them as well. He was a legend - even calling Padres games until a year before he died.

Whenever I hear Merlin Olsen or Bob Trumpy, I immediately think late Sunday AFC West battle featuring the Raiders & Seahawks at the L.A. Coliseum with the track around the field on NBC...

Canterbury run in with some of them years ago. Haven’t been back in years.

A few that I have good memories of are Dave Pasch, Mike Patrick and Jason Benetti during the 2010s:
  • Dave Pasch announced Vs. Nebraska in 2013 and 2014.
  • Mike Patrick announced the Little Brown Jug game in 2014.
  • Jason Benetti announced the Axe game in 2018.
For national broadcasts, I always enjoyed the likes of Jackson, Musburger and Nessler. I really like Mike Tirico so was always glad when he'd get involved during bowl season.

I do enjoy the Fowler|Herbstreit team but unfortunately my main memories with them for Minnesota are 2015 Vs. Michigan and 2019 Vs. Wisconsin.

I liked when Benetti called the Outback Bowl and the sheer disbelief in his voice when he discovered Tyler Johnson was actually in bounds on that ridiculous TD grab in the back of the end zone

Oh nelly, how can we not talk about Keith Jackson here. GOAT.

Worst : Sam Acho, Roddy Jones, Mike Golic

Best:

Joe Tesitore and Jesse Palmer

Louis Riddick

Noah Eagle and Todd Blackledge

I also love Brad nesler and Gary Danielson, but then again I'm old and close to 50

Dave Lee was best when he had his 9:00 daily show on KFGO 790 Fargo. That was a fun listen. He had to go corporate when he got to ‘CCO. His annual “Sytende Mai Radio Parade”, allegedly starting from the city dump was a highlight.
