Per ESPN:

The sport has changed dramatically in recent years, even for the biggest and most powerful programs such as Ohio State, as players flow in and out of locker rooms, and salary demands rise. Day thinks the challenge for national contending programs has some parallels to what the dinosaurs faced millions of years ago.

"Some dinosaurs figured out to continue to adapt, and some died," Day said Tuesday. "I guess that's a little extreme, but I think it's kind of the way it is in college football. The people who know how to adapt are going to continue to move on, and the ones who don't, they die. So as frustrating as it all is, as much as we all want to just pull our hair out and throw our hands up and realize this is all extremely crazy ... either you adapt or you die."

Ohio State lost more than 30 players to the transfer portal after the 2025 season, most of them reserves, but also contributors such as running back James Peoples and offensive lineman Tegra Tshabola. The Buckeyes also brought in some notable transfers, including Alabama defenders Qua Russaw and James Smith.

Day recently spoke with NFL staff members at Ohio State's pro day, who questioned his decision to remain in college football. After winning its first national title under Day in 2024, Ohio State lost to Miami in the CFP quarterfinals in December. Day is 82-12 in seven seasons as Buckeyes coach.

"This is another phase of it," Day said. "Half of your team is new, they haven't played a down of football here, and we're not allowed to lose a game. So we're going to adapt. We're not going to die."

Go Gophers!!

Yea right.....adapt or die. When you have a bottomless pit of money like OH State, it's a different playing field than most programs.

I wasn't there (although at my age I sometimes feel like I was), but after the meteor hit I don't think the dinosaurs had much of a chance to adapt.

There goes Ryan Day, pushing his avian propaganda again. Since the beginning, he's been gushing over birds and how they are the only dinosaurs that survived the K-Pg extinction, and I for one am getting really tired of it.

Poor Ryan

We may be a blue blood program, but do we really have lots of cash available for our hockey program? Many on Gopher Hole feel otherwise and site that as a major reason our program has (will) continue to slide backwards.

Yep but with the wrong coach any blue blood program can go south...see Gopher Hockey.
I wouldn't say Gopher hockey went south or that Motzko was the wrong coach. He was a very good coach that had one bad season (but yes it was time for a new coach). And hockey is on a much more level field (or ice) than football due to the nature of the game. Michigan State and Penn State dumped huge sums of money into this season and still didn't make the Frozen Four.

Then they are idiots...

Fair point, but if he had the same winning percentage at OSU coaching football he would have been gone years ago. I'm not saying he was horrible but he did not take a blue blood hockey program where he should have.

I don’t know you - but I like you. 🤣

Before this year Motzko's only real failure was not winning a national championship. His winning percentage was excellent, had a 6 year run of making the NCAAs, 3 regular season conference titles, and 1 BT tournament title. Should MSU fire their coach for not making the Frozen Four after they spent all that money?

I don't disagree with your premise about Day but I just think Motzko is a bad example.

Minds can disagree.
