Illinois Gets New Scoreboard

I do wish they would expand the scoreboard that is behind the student section. It doesn't have to be insanely big but it's long overdue for an upgrade.
I'd like that idea as well. Problem is, they still haven't paid for the Village yet.

Since they aren't going to add on they should flip and put a giant rectangular scoreboard on the third deck and redo the open end. The stadium could use some upgrades.

I thought of that too but the problem is the students wound have no views of it. That's why I think a simple upgrade to the existing one would be fine. It doesn't have to be gaudy.

Biggest in college, they are saying...

Quite a while ago (as in something like 2005) I tried pulling a patent on the idea of embedding fiber-optical light cables into artificial turf, which would have made the entire field a giant video screen. For football games, you could have seen tracers as a player was running, had the first down line illuminated, and yes, advertising to pay for it all (there's always a down side to cool tech). Someone else beat me to the concept by six months. I was thinking that by now we'd at least see some of that tech make its way to a field - maybe even a small part like the end zones.

Daktronics seems to dominate the scoreboard industry.
I would honestly be curious if there is another major player in major US stadiums, at all.

Back in the day, Sony made them and used the "Jumbotron" brand on them. Some people still use that brand name mistakenly to refer to large display boards.

I did Google research their competitors and some exist but not necessarily in the large stadium display space.

Daktronics also offers operators, training, etc beyond just the equipment. A real juggernaut in a niche industry.

This is brilliant, and has to be coming at some point.

I would think you could at the very least use it to run ads, say along the border of the field. Like how they do on hockey boards?

If I am understanding this correctly, wouldn't the illiminated field and tracers be pretty distracting to players? On broadcasts, they have been using video technology for severall years to advertise.

The patent is pretty old by now, nearing expiration. So yes, maybe someone will make it happen.

Just one of many ideas I was going to play with - I liked the idea of a tracer turning colors depending on how fast a person was running. After each play you could see the route every player took. Again, I did a patent check and someone beat me to the idea, so I never pursued this. Thought it'd be fun to see the endzone light up with Goldy's face when we score. And sure, you can do what you want on a video - but this is for the fans-in-the-stands.
