Gopher Hockey Season Thread 25-26

USA special teams suck again. But then the whole team does so there is that. Not even gonna medal, but Bob will have the injuries to blame.

I mean... Who is surprised. It was a retirement gift to Bob to let him coach

They are not calling anything against the boards like I have seen in other IIHF events.

Hit guys in the head or into the boards from behind, no big deal. Bump into the goalie while brining the puck to the net, you sit in jail. What has become of the IIHF.

Oh Bob, just like the NCAA Championship. USA had the puck but had no idea what to do with it in overtime. To be honest lucky to get to overtime as they had no zone entry except for one vs Finland.

So it's Bob fault that the players can't execute?

Ryker Lee made a pair of dumb plays while they had the puck, Hutson had a shot and they had one other spinning shot. Kempf gave up an ass goal with Kleber getting out of position and some bad communication from Hagens, Zeimer and him. I personally hate 3v3 knockout ot. These guys can do it, but the way teams have learned to trap and defend 3v3 just turns blah. Theres a reason the NHL doesn’t do that shit in the playoffs. Finland played good defense and is a very solid team. Theres no shame in saying that without dunking on the US

This team never really gelled like prior teams. Looked like individuals trying to do too much all tournament

No, Bob is the coach. The WJC coaching job requires building a cohesive team in very short period time. Bob did not do that.
That part is the only part I really “blame” Bob for. Losing Hutson really seemed to hurt a ton but they still all played like individuals all tourney. You can’t do that at this level and is part of why Canada has looked way better this year than last.

You can always argue about personnel choices and stuff (personally I wouldn’t have played Kleber as much as he did, especially in OT) but really it’s about compiling and gelling a team. For whatever reason they really just didn’t come together and that was the bigger issue than the “talent” or “execution” on the team

By all accounts, this team was not as talented as years past. That is not on Bob, that is just the facts. Plus, I was told by an expert here that Bob really wasn't coaching and that his assistants were. Which is it? Bob was in a no win situation. The haters will find any excuse to blame him. These players were the best we had. It was an all star team. If they can't figure it out, it is all on them.

Sounds like I am qualified to coach the team….

Aren't we glad that there's no shootouts in the NCAA Tournament.🤣🤣🤣

Let’s hope McKenna is as ineffective this weekend as he was last night.

Biggest bunch of entitled sore losers is team Canada once again. The team USA letdown sucked but at least our guys handled the loss with class. F Canada.

100% correct. That display of Canadian poor sportsmanship set a new bar.

Shocker the team is still fucking brutal and the lame duck coach did nothing to change it at the break

I’ve watched bag skates more entertaining then the game tonight.
Yeah this one was not much to write home about. Boring hockey. Penn State didn't look like world beaters either and they still managed to shut us out. Maybe we can salvage a split tonight but I have to say that I'm not expecting that.

yeah PSU will go as far as their PP carries them. They're 1-5 when they don't score a PPG. They have a lot of talent, but they look soft, chippy and like they want to spend more time talking than working which i guess makes sense when your "high profile" players are a bunch of Canadians you paid to be here and old east coast kids

Doesn't matter because we just aren't very good, but comps without goalies
PSU: 5 02s (1 healthy scratch), 4 03s, 8 04s (2 are their healthy scratches), 3 05s, 3 07s (McKenna and Smith) with Fink being the only guy who's missed any meaningful time; total draft picks 7 (counting McKenna) with 2 1st rounders and 1 2nd rounder.
Minn: 0 02s, 7 03s (Rud Begley and Harris all in this group), 5 04s, 3 05s, 3 06s, 3 07s with 8 guys who have missed games for non-scratch reasons; total draft picks 12 with one 2nd rounder

Part of why unloading the guys you unloaded hurts as they're your high skill guys in these classes with PSU having all of theirs come back and that PSU has 2 1st rounders as the high end that Bob really should've tried to pull out of the CHL instead of being bullheaded as it pushes some of those role playing young guys down the lineup rather than needing Moore/Moe/etc. to be a steady contributor night after night. The teams aren't all that different on paper other than 1 has their contributors who are older/experienced and their young guys are very high-end players or play 4th line roles i.e. how you're supposed to construct a full roster in the B10.

You do kind of wonder if Chesley and Kurth (and to lesser extent Rinzel despite his demotion) regret signing now given both would have been free to sign with anyone had they come back and played out their senior years playing top line/pairing roles

Agree 100% with all of that. Good write-up and especially nice breakdown of the age groups.

Joke of a 5 on gophers. That should be five on the Penn state player then too for hitting from behind after the penalty was called.
