Well whatever the “Athletic Ranking” is. It has Minnesota at 18 to start the year. I am still very excited and see a ton of potential.

The Athletic is a sports publication that is now a subsidiary of The New York Times. They released their rankings.
 


I'm excited to get the season started and finally see what this team can do. There have been so many different takes in the media on the Gophers positioning, ranging from being top 4-6 in the Big Ten and 18th nationally, to being last 4 into the tournament. And I get why, they have the coaching staff and the talent to perform at the highest level, but Braun and Woodson's injuries and comeback performances leave a lot of mystery in the air for now.

It's time to get some real results because the whiplash is killing me. With Marquette coming here in a couple of weeks, traveling to Kansas afterward, and the Thanksgiving week tournament, we should be able to see what this team's true potential is very quickly!

Interesting. It seems like Charlie Creme currently tends to prefer prior season performances to who is actually on the roster for the upcoming season. Not sure I'd say Indiana and Illinois (who are both rebuilding this year after losing multiple significant players each) are going to do better than Minnesota.

Charlie Creme moving Minnesota down to 13th among BIG teams seems like an overreaction to the Heyer departure. There are some independent analysts out there who are more sanguine about the Gophers (at least pre-Heyer departure):

Agree 100% on Indiana. They are definitely on the rebuild train. He has Illinois as a 10 seed and I think that they could end up anywhere from an 8 to just out of the tournament.

As for the Gophers, he mentions the Heyer transfer prominently in his write-up as a reason they fell slightly from the prior Bracketology. Time will tell but I think the Athletic has it nailed and we could compete for a Top-16 seed if everything goes well for us.
 

I read the preseason rankings to get more updated info on rosters and schedules. Other than a few perennial power house programs I don’t give them much weight. We all know the impact injuries, transfers and the elusive “ team chemistry “ can have on teams. I am admitted fan / follower of ND and after beating UConn handily and being ranked #1 they disappeared after their winter tourney. Nothing was ever discussed / shared but it was painfully obvious that Hidalgo n Miles were no longer playing well as teammates. Fast forward to a game with players from the W this summer n the two of them are caught finger pointing and yelling @ each other in a hallway. This was a FF team but a shift in the locker room wiped out that potential. I do not expect the Gophers to experience this but use it as an example of the multiple ways a team can go up/ down in the ranking.
 




I watched last year’s Belmont game this morning. I’m not going to compare starters today. Obviously there was no Braun and we have no idea what can/will happen with injuries. As far as the bench from that game.
Glenn > Rose I know Coach P said she did a lot of things out there but her lack of scoring ability really bothered me. I think Glenn is actually even better defensively and can score
Christian > Czinano (though I love that she stayed all four years)
Stewart > Tonga I gave Stewart the nod because of outside shooting, but I actually think Tonga may be more physical.

Anyway there is no point to this but just my observation
 

Gophers moved up some in this weeks poll. Still receiving votes but moved up to #27. Beat Kansas on the road and I think a ranking will happen. Will learn a lot about this team over the next three games.

Also, I just looked the the Gophers conference schedule and holy crap do they have it tough to open the first half.
 

Has anyone heard how Woodson is doing? Assuming she has had her surgery? Haven’t seen her on the bench with team yet.
 

Taylor was at the end of the bench when were at the Maryland game. I only know that because people around us were saying hi to her.
 




I appreciate the question and answer about Woodson. Got me wondering, maybe I missed this, but is it official that the freshman Zoey Bershers will not play this season?

Coach P has mastered the NET with efficient blowout victories against Quad 3-4 teams. The RPI, which the NET replaced, ranks the Gophers # 99. The Gophers have yet to beat a NET Quad 1-2 team, though Marquette has bounced back and forth from a Quad 2-3 victory and could easily end up a Quad 2 victory (but is Quad 3 today). South Florida perhaps could end up a Quad 2 victory, but less likely.

Opportunity knocks today with a high Quad 2 victory chance today against a personnel-challenged IU team, especially if Socka-Nguemen is not back from injury. Feeling optimistic about the Gophers chances today.
