***OFFICIAL TEXAS SOUTHERN AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Good to see Cade going off from outside. Good to leave no doubt in this one

Near the end of the game we had 26 assists to 27 made baskets. Reynolds had a career high 10 assists.
I am impressed with the solid fundamentals that Niko is installing. The Gophers get the ball up the court with efficiency, hardly dribbling the ball. In one possession we got the rebound and had it up court without a dribble. Unfortunately Shinholster caught his foot on the floor and traveled on the catch up court. But, the ball movement is excellent and so refreshing to see.
Asuma is an enigma with his shooting, however. He air balled a wide open three and then comes down and nails a contested three. How do you air ball a three as a starting guard?

Our biggest problem is our lack of depth. Good thing the kids have a week off as the B1G season is going to be a long grind for the healthy.

The other alternative is to get him to lose weight. He'd be reasonably athletic if he were 30 pounds lighter. I'd love to see him do what Mo Walker did here.
It be great if that happened but if Mo could have transferred out with no consequence who knows if he would have stayed and put in the work either

I covered a woman who, for a time, was the all-time conference leader in 3-point shots made. I think she was about 35% from distance for her career. Very streaky. Might miss 5-6 in a row with an airball and another that missed the rim completely on wide open shots, then would go on and hit her next 5 in a row. I'd have to double check, but I think she attempted about 6-7 per game for her career. Coach never told her to stop shooting because, shooters shoot.

And your point is?
Asuma is a streaky good shooter?
Even great players shoot uncontested air balls?
Asuma is as good as a woman you covered?
My point is that missing everything when unguarded is shocking at a D1 level.
Asuma does so many good things that this area of his game (shooting) is not going to keep him out of the lineup. Asuma is a sophomore and he now has a head coach who will make him better. I don't expect air balls when he's a senior.

Think just as you posted this an unguarded Westbrook air balled one from right in the lane for the Sacramento Kings against the Wolves.

I think if he was willing to put in the work to lose the weight, he would have by now. Basketball is a full workout. To remain out of shape while playing full time high-level basketball, you’ve really gotta be committed to the bit. Also, if I’m right, very few coaches will reward that sort of sloth with playing time.

You may be right. I thought I had heard he was much heavier in his first year of college and maybe he is on his way to where he needs to be? Not sure. Niko knew he was getting a guy that was overweight, that much is for sure.

Chances he transfers after the season: 98%
I'm pretty sure the guy we got is his never played before twin brother who showed up to cash the checks for him while basketball playing brother hopefully returns from his mystery disappearance.
If I'm wrong...are you gonna be upset if he transfers and we can pay someone else the money?

Last week there was information that there are no timetables on any of the players. That was not encouraging IMO.
The FDU game is 2 weeks from tonight...hopefully we can get at least one of the guys back by then (guessing Vaihola is the closest?).

That would allow them to get some minutes and ramp up before B1G kicks off in earnest on 1/3.

Not to be Debby Downer but we are totally screwed unless some of these guys are able to make it back. The 6.5 man rotation will just not be sustainable for us.

Omot's status is a complete enigma. He played in the preseason scrimmage but had a setback / re aggravation? The fact that he's played only 4 games in like the last 2 calendar years certainly isn't promising. He was an iron man at North Dakota too, didn't miss any games at all over 2 seasons.

Is Chance Stephens out for the season? Niko hasn't announced it like he did with Willis, so maybe there's a possibility there...no idea. We could certainly use another guard in the rotation but really any warm body will do at this point.

Stephens was first to be announced out for season back before the season even started.

I remember Pitino was hired in what? March or April?

He gave Mo Walker an ultimatum, and Big Mo was Skinny Mo by the start of that season—just an insane transformation in 7/8 months.

There's really just no excuse when you're playing ball daily, have a state-of-the-art fitness center, and endless nutritious food options at your disposal.

I think that answers the question of "How do you airball a 3 as a starting guard". In other words, it happens at every level of basketball from middle school to professional. It wouldn't shock me if even Curry has airballed a 3 pointer or 2 in his career. A normal life comparison might be; after millions of times taking my keys out of the ignition and putting them in my pocket, how in the world did I lock them in my car yesterday?!? :)

Few things.
Game was never in doubt. Good thing.

Hopefully we skip over these type games in the future. We can play some lesser teams but maybe not like the worst 3-4 teams in D1 😅

Injuries have been tough. I get why they don't do it, but any update on omot or vaihola would be nice. We def need some depth for conference play.

After last night we are #1 in the country assisting on 72% of made FG. I think that is an excellent stat. Especially considering we don't have our starting PG. I think that shows we run good sets and get good shots. For a program that likely will never have top 10-15 pure talent, that is huge. That's how you beat teams like Indiana who are just more physically talented. Now the hope is we got on a few guys and we get that talent, but it's nice if we aren't totally cooked without it.

I’ve witnessed pedestrians sink half-courters at the Barn.
