Anyone follow OSU basketball or Taison Chatman? For someone so highly rated out of HS, he is still averaging less than 7 min/game. Is he just not talented enough to get minutes / doesn’t mesh with OSU style / something else? I could see a transfer coming end of season if he doesn’t get some more run

Highly rated for a mn guard, but not highly rated for an Ohio St player. They get mostly 4 star players, and occasionally five stars.
He was a 4 star on both rivals and 247.

He’s had back to back DNP-CDs after getting brought in against Pitt and committing three fouls in less than a minute which is quite an accomplishment. Saw he tore up his knee in a summer workout that cost him his second season, could still be struggling with that. I wouldn’t be surprised if Diebler gets the boot as OSU’s looked pretty mediocre so if Chatman’s not being pushed out the door already, he probably will be by a new coach.

Tough to say whether he’s worth a flier or not but Niko’s going to need to replace Tyson’s shot making next year and if nothing else, Chatman can be a bucket getter if he’s right.

He was never much of a bucket getter. Could score, but much more of a point guard mindset.

I’ve watched most of their games, it’s been up and down for him. He had a couple of good games and then barely played. Had the game with the 3 fouls as mentioned and really only 1 was bad. Then had two DNP because of that. Looked good tonight. Assistant coaches don’t even know what Diebler is doing half the time lol, He has weird rotations in that way. Ohio kids definitely seem to be getting some preference over him. Mobley makes a lot of mistakes but often stays out because he can make plays. Taison is more of a shooter and plays the same spot so I think that might be some challenge for him. Thornton can play either the 1 or 2 so that changes things for him too. Hopefully he can find a role.

A bucket getter isn’t necessarily someone who hunts their shot. I think similar to Chatman, Tyson is a bucket getter but he does so in the flow of the offense. What I think separates someone like Taison is his tremendous feel for the game, which is where I think calling him a combo guard makes much more sense, he can play on or off the ball, great passer, no wasted motion which obviously really fits Niko’s system.

I agree that they will need to recruit a scorer from the portal but in what universe would you replace one of the four 21 point per game scorers in the conference with a player with a career average of 1.6 points per game and a history of injuries?

Lots of 4 star players don’t pan out in college.

That's so true but doesn't seem to register for some people. It's the strangely powerful influence of online fantasy sports. If someone is rated a 4-star player coming from high school, he must be really good regardless of the established record of non-productivity.

For one, it’s going to be a collective effort replacing Tyson. There’s just not a scenario where it’s one in and one out, smooth sailing. The injuries are definitely reason for pause on Chatman but I do think he’s a much better player than he’s been allowed to show at OSU.
