Per Marcus:

East Ridge’s Cedric Tomes and Wayzata’s Nolen Anderson kicked off National Signing Day on Wednesday by making their commitment to the Gophers men’s basketball team official.

“I’m super excited,” Tomes told Strib Varsity after signing with other East Ridge athletes at the high school gym. “To play for my home state is kind of what every kid dreams of. It’s for sure what I’ve dreamed of. Now that I’ve signed, I’m just excited to make my impact right away.”

Tomes, a 6-foot guard, averaged 27.3 points and had a breakout year as a junior for the Raptors last season, putting up three 40-point games.

Anderson, a 6-7 wing, averaged 17.5 points last season and led the Trojans to the Class 4A state title with a team-best 24 points, 10 rebounds and two steals in the championship game against Cretin-Derham Hall at Williams Arena.

Tomes and Anderson were AAU teammates at D1 Minnesota with Wayzata’s Christian Wiggins, who signed Wednesday with Iowa State.

“He’s a great player to play with,” Tomes said of Anderson. “He’s a funny guy, but he’s serious about his work, too. You love to be around people who are about their work.”

Go Gophers!!

Got a little misty… watching ball movement, both sides of the court being used.. players cutting.. I have been watching it St Paul nice to see it in Minneapolis.. makes the game fun and entertaining

Neither of these signings really move the needle much to be honest. Hopefully, they can become some solid role players.

Players can and do improve with better nutrition, weight lifting and coaching.

No one thought Walter Bond would end up having an NBA career🤠

It’s the holidays, let your optimism shine🎅

Until the gophers have success, those top 100 players, aren't coming to the gophers. Knowing that fact, getting system guys is the next best thing.

N. Anderson's game is much like Tyson's. He might be slightly less athletic. It's too bad, in many ways, Tyson doesn't have another year for him to learn behind.

Tomes' combo guard game is much like M. Carr and maybe Westbrook, being great one on one scorers. The challenge will be getting him to fit his game into a system, and being 6-1, setting up others and running offense.

Heck, look at the responses from when Kai Shinholster decided to stay. In our minds he should have been the last of the 3 recruits that should have been prioritized. Now we are hoping he gets more minutes and loving his hustle.

Tomes is a pure shooter, not sure of the Carr comparison. Carr was a decent shooter but more ball dominant player and all around scorer.

Tomes will be able to play off the ball, running off screens, etc. He'll need to work on his body and am not sure of his passing/pick and roll ability yet (haven't seen him play enough).

Carr was a bully PG and a master in the P&R.

Yup and great response.

Grove may never be a regular starter, but he’ll bring his lunch pail to work, every time he’s in the game.

I think one of Niko’s strengths is knowing how to build a team and where the players/pieces fit for his roster. Plus, as a fan it’s great to watch guys grow and improve over 3/4 years.

I’m not sure Carr would fit in Nico’s movement offense. Too much dribbling, looking to make things happen on his own.

That is exactly what I've heard about Tomes. He is 6-1 at best, so he will need to play the point most likely. Carr could also pass, when he wanted.

Tomes and Freitag seemed like similar players in that they had a free-wheeling high school career, more scorer than set up man, and in Freitag's case didn't fit into Wisconsin's system and is now putting up 20ppg, 4 reb, 2.6 assists for Buffalo. Freitag was a bit bigger and more athletic, thus the higher high school ranking, and the ability to play a little SG.

I wonder if Neko is in contact with Isaac Asuma's cousin at Cherry, Isaiah Asuma a JR PG, who's been starting for Cherry since 7th or 8th grade. He is a natural PG, who can score, and has a very high IQ. He was listed at 6-1 last year, but that may have been a gift.
