***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA VS STANFORD THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Grove played like a guy (and has played all year) the coaches told “you can’t get in foul trouble or we won’t be able to play any bigs.” I do see some potential

After Willis went out, having Langston bring the ball up is malpractice, and to add to that, most of the time Ike was running ahead to go stand in the corner, for god knows what reason, but that is the set the coach runs, leaving ZERO outlets for LR and his greasy handles.

JCJ is being put in a bad spot having to guard out of position, and looks uncomfortable and has to have a really high work rate to tackle the bigger or faster guys he has to guard.

Kai shows a lot of hustle

Willis logged 4 minutes and 7 other guys played. Turner not getting a minute, again, is worrisome

This team, right now, has more problems than a math book.

1. Asuma has too much talent to do so little....
2. Turner is fat and I'm betting this is a little message to him to get his ass in shape. They were desperate for rebounding and he couldn't get off the bench.
3. Willis can't shoot and is now hurt....
4. Reynolds should be playing on the intramural team where his 7th grade level ball-handling wound't be an issue.
5. I don't know who they are going to beat in the B10.....it's gonna be a historically bad season.

We don't have size. We don't have Big Ten athletes. We don't have Big Ten talent, other than Tyson.
Lack of size, length or quickness makes development difficult at this level for the future...to actually be good we need different players and/or different talent evaluators. When it comes to checking boxes on the what our stengths are...we don;t do much elite. Junk yard dogs....none of those either...quick, relentless, hustling, hungry...to make up for lack of skill or talent.

Vaiola helps the team a lot with his screens to get guys driving lanes and shots. Have not seen Omot....hopefully, he helps but we are short 3 guards.

Very winnable game. Got beat by a freshman who probably would not start for any B1G team … except the Gophers. Picking this team to finish last or 15fh in the B1G is looking correct.

That kid would start for a lot of Big Ten teams- he is good. The rest of the Stanford team? Not so much.

Can someone remind the two freshman who changed committment after Ben was let go? Where did they end up signing? Was it a Parker and Ross?

The big kid Parker Jefferson is at Gonzaga and has not played yet as far as I can see. Ross is at UConn and I don't think he has played either.

The kid is really, really good. Our guard play is horrid. Where was Willis the second half? Did he play? I like Reynolds but his handle is ultra loose. Asuma seems not to do much for a lot of the game.
I wonder if Asuma is still dealing with a back injury. I agree that Isaac needs to rise up and be the leader of this ragtag band. He is now, clearly, the point guard and he has to act like it. He needs to be more aggressive in directing his teammates and in getting past the first layer of defense. Now is his time to lead and I think Niko needs to really challenge him.

Yes, those were the two. Parker went to Gonzaga and Ross to Connecticut. Neither has played so far this year.

During Ben Johnson's second year, there was a proposed mock tournament of losers that circulated around the web. I believe it included Louisville (4-28), California (3-29), Georgetown (7-25), and the Gophers (9-22) and asked "Who Would Win this Tournament?" Maybe we'll see something similar later this season.

I don't know if that term "historically bad" can be applied to Gopher basketball anymore. One uses that term to refer to something that is exceptionally bad in a way that is almost unprecedented. Since this program went 9-22 in 2006-07, 8-23 in 2015-16, and 9-22 in 2022-23, I would say that single digit win seasons aren't so unprecedented around here.

As far as "who they are going to beat" in the conference, well, probably someone. I've lost track of how many times I've read someone write that but the team always seems to stumble into at least a couple of conference wins no matter how awful they are.

?
Medved had Reynolds playing point the majority of the game. Hard for Asuma to lead standing in the corner while Reynolds does an awkward drive and turns it over.

I didn't watch the game but one minute watching Reynolds should be enough to tell you he isn't a PG. Makes me wonder about college coaching, Medved wouldn't be the only one that appeared to me to have no idea about the position. I would throw Dan, Tubby, and Richard in the same boat.

It's possible he's just not that good.

He's better than what he has shown the last 4 games though, we've seen it. He seems reluctant to make things happen in the paint right now which is where I think he is strongest at. He is okay at best shooting threes, but has been settling. He is still wearing the back brace when he goes to the bench during the game, wondering if that does have anything to do with his play recently.

A few thoughts.

Yes it hasn't been great.

FTs still crushing us, just something this program i guess can't figure out.

Rebounding and PG play an issue. Viahola Willis Omot injuries have exasperated those issues.

This isn't an inexperienced coach. I know it hasn't happened in a while around here but it is possible we improve throughout the year.

Durkin has seemingly gotten more comfortable after a bad start.

Reynolds looks like a guy who was physically dominant at a lower level but needs to play much more under control and in system ti be successful in the B1G

Richard Pitino knows point guards: Any of Nate Mason, Marcus Carr, DeAndre Mathieu, Amir Coffey, even Isaiah Washington and of course Donovan Dent would make this team immeasurably better.

IW is not making this team better 🤣. Everyone else though, big time.

That could be true. But it’s not like he’s showing that much in all the time he’s been here.
