Start slow, allow a middling offense to put up more yards than Oregon did, and choose to go into the season with a FG kicker who can’t be counted on from 40 yards. NW got some non-calls at the end of the game that sealed their win, but truth be told, the Gophers did not deserve to win. This is the first Gophers team in years that, IMHO, is markedly underplaying its player potential. And I think the player effort and buy-in is there. It seems that our defense is poorly prepared and coached. We have made a lot of middling offenses look like juggernauts. Snow game against the Badgers next week.

Our defense and kicker is the reason we lost these games. We cannot stop no one and the kicker cannot kick if his life depended on it. I expect college kickers to miss kicks of 50 or more yards. But God damn

How so? He's a Big Ten kicker and can't be relied upon to make a 40 yard field goal WITH the wind at his back?
 




It’s understandable if a school like MN doesn’t have the funds to compete for top athletes but you can NOT compound that by being cheap on coaching.

If a team doesn’t have as much talent they have to execute the Xs and Os flawlessly.

The Gophers have not been anywhere near that this season. It’s been absolutely terrible fundamentals all season. None of which have been cleaned up.

Not arguing with what you are stating. I'm wondering why it was so hard to coach kids up on defense where they had to rely on the kicker. Only 1/2 the team showed up today.
 

It was a close, entertaining, hard fought game.
I’m glad the players didn’t quit on each other.
Too bad the coaching wasn’t near good enough.
Can’t wait for PJ to take another job!

Doesn't matter. Defense was god awful today. Nobody is arguing that. Kicker was equally bad and contributed heavily to the loss.

Entertaining? Not even close. The missed tackles and giving up big yard catches to NW was frustrating

lol. What? They had 45 seconds to score and we gave him a great chance. You can expect a Big Ten kicker to hit one of those chances today.
 

Good news: For the first time on the road this season, the Gophers beat the spread (which was at NW by 3.5)!
Bad news: NW’s time of possession was over 40 minutes! It averaged over 7.5 yards per play. It gained more yards against the Gophers than Oregon did, or Ohio State did, or Cal did (or Iowa did). The Gophers offense, based on NW’s history to date, did more than enough to win. The Gophers defense has steadily regressed all season. No pass rush, no coverage, poor tackling. Sigh …

NW’s FG kicker was 3-3. Goph’s FG kicker was 0-2 on kicks that most B1G kickers makes as a matter of course. Not the way to win one score games.

He came along with the new ST’s coordinator (Syracuse). Strong leg for KOs; he was a KO specialist at Syracuse. But .., in 2024 at Syracuse, he was 3-6 in FG attempts with a long of 33. He was 10-16 in 2023, but did have a make from 46 yards. Good kid, I’m sure. Strong leg. But simply not dependable outside 40 yards. PJ’s goal this year was to improve the Gophs’ record by winning more one score games … did his choice of a FG kicker who was 3-6 last season with a long of 33 further that goal? 🤷🏼‍♂️ It’s a tough business.
