Anyone else surprised we haven’t been able to bring in any talent from NDSU or SDSU? While our region doesn’t produce a lot of p4 talent, it does produce the pipeline for the best of FCS. NDSU’s last 4 LT’s have been drafted, and are either still in the NFL, or had decent careers. 3 played HS in Minnesota, 1
in SD. NDSU’s current LT is a RS SO from Spring Lake Park.

We need to upgrade talent, not stay even. Getting kids looking for playing time from Georgia and Alabama seems like a much better idea.
Our current RG and RT were brought in from UCF and Kentucky, and are both terrible. Some of our best portal hits have been FCS players. I’d much rather take a kid that has shown to be a player at the upper level of FCS, than somebody that has flamed out at higher levels. Also since money matters, I wonder if there’s not more value to be had.

Well we brought in Max Brosmer from a different FCS school who was the divisions passing leader and FCS All American the previous year. I guess it all depends how you look at it.

The RT try’s but to be, honest he should be playing for St.Thomas. His skill level does not match B1G needs. And then he is on the receiving end of very poor coaching. Lack of talent, lack of coaching, we see the end result.

Agreed. Portal recruits from the highest-level programs tend to have more stars beside their names coming from high school but more than a few of those players tend not to achieve much once they get to the elite collegiate ranks. I remember reading something about Cignetti where he said that he was only interested in portal players who made significant contributions at their prior schools.

He’d been in college ball four years before he got here never took a snap at tackle. Stared as a walk on at WVU. I don’t get why he’s playing unless he and 74 got NIL to the point our knuckleheads feel obligated to play them?

Did you miss the post where I said some of our most impactful transfers have been from the FCS?

Black Jack approves this post 💪

Being a Coyote I take offense to the OP title referencing State v U. USD lost an O tackle who is starting for Cincinnati and has one more year left which was just announced as one of ten finalists for OL of the year. From Sioux Falls I’m sure he would have listened had we come calling. They also lost two other starting OL, their leading tackler and receiver. SDSU got hit harder, I believe, not even counting the QB. The OP has a point.

So their last four LTs were drafted, and I’m guessing none them had to transfer out to get drafted? That kind of answers the question. They have to actually enter the portal for us to get them. The ones that do enter probably want to get paid or get out the region, they don’t have to worry about NFL eyes seeing them.

We have to try find value. If we can’t afford the high end transfers where do you find it? Our advantage is we have far more money to pay than NDSU. The players obviously know they can reach the NFL from Fargo, as they have more Oline draft picks than we do. As most are from Minnesota they probably also have a chip on their shoulder about not receiving an offer from the U out of HS I get that. Money can change those feelings, I’m guessing it may be the most affordable place for us to look for significant upgrades. Also if you think players need to be in the portal to find out about interest from other schools, you don’t know any current FBS players.

So you’re suggesting we break the rules and make offers to players from the Dakota schools that aren’t in the portal? That’s not a long term viable strategy. It sounds like a great video game strategy, but is not realistic.

You have no idea how current college football works. Players have agents. Agents inform their players of what’s out there.

I can guarantee you that those schools would not just sit back and allow themselves to be feeder programs for the gophers. If it was that easy we’d be doing it.

SDSU is not good this year. They’ve been fleeced of coaches and players.

NDSU seems to hold guys because they put guys into the NFL and are the top dog of FCS.

By the way St Thomas at NDSU this week.

I’m a Gopher fan, unlike alot of the fatalistic people on here I’m trying to think of the few advantages our program has. We can offer BiG Ten rev share money that NDSU can’t. Those programs have no say if they are feeder programs, much like we had no say on being a feeder program for Bucky to Oregon. Texas Tech has a starting safety from NDSU. Miami, MIAMI!! the RB factory! Their second string RB is from NDSU.

SDSU is ranked 15th. That's not horrible.

His point was accurate. Their coach went to Washington State and they lost over 20 players to portal. They started ranked 2nd but have lost 4 straight and are not close to what they were in last 5 years.

Hate to say it ... but would an NDSU player who is good enough to portal up to the Big Ten ... choose to come to Minnesota?

My guess is they would say something like "... then why didn't you recruit me in the first place?"

Depends on the offer.

A few hundred thousand and a Ford Raptor would change their mind.

SDSU doesn't have any high end talent right now but point taken.

So the guys the Dakota schools are putting in the league wouldn't be an upgrade over the guys here that go on to sell insurance?

Your RB, Larry Phillips Jr is going to get very impressive FBS offers if he wants them.

Former SDSU WR Griffen Wilde and offensive lineman Evan Beerntsen are at Northwestern. Not the most attractive landing spot spot. Granted, the OC and line coaches are former SDSU coaches.

SDSU QB Gronowski and defensive lineman Hawthorne are at Iowa. Hawthorne's brother played here.

It gets a little suspicious when guys start leaving for the same school over and over.

People seem to think every Dakota player was an overlooked kid from MN. If they’re good enough to play here they’ll have other offers. Us being located closer probably isn’t a powerful draw for the many that aren’t from MN.

You mention the last for tackles for NDSU getting drafted....note that those 4 all stayed at NDSU until they were drafted, it isn't like we would be their only power 4 option and they elected to stay put.

Very possible that we, along with other power 4 schools have tried to tamper with these players and have come up empty.

15th in FCS might as well be D2. They've lost 4 games in a row by average of 16 per game. A loss to UND this week would mean being swept by the Dakotas.

They coach left last year and took a bunch of players/recruits to Washington State.
