Pharrell Payne did something and got hurt badly maybe?

He had a history of back problems here. I wonder if it’s that again. Or maybe hip. It was gruesome but not obvious what the injury was. Quick search doesn’t indicate any more information on the injury.

Too bad he did the chin up and swung his legs out to make it look more monstrous of a dunk. A normal dunk would have provided a safe, controlled landing. He got the style points but couldn’t stick the landing. I hope he avoided serious injury. I liked Payne’s potential and growth while he was here. Now that he’s not he’s like every other player from here (Gopher, Viking, Timberwolf, Twin, etc.): a somewhat interesting footnote when you see them later in their career.

My first look at the gruesome video was that he was not hotdogging on the dunk but initially trying to protect himself. There looked to be a guy under him not doing anything dirty but just there. It’s crowded in the lane all the time now but has to be horribly discouraging to get a potential season ending injury on no contact with another body.

I had my wife, who is a physical therapist, watch the injury. Her immediate reaction was, "He may have broke his femur." I am waiting to hear what Maryland shares about Pharrel's injury. This incident shows how quickly life can turn without any warning.

Bad take. If you watch it close, it's not because of the hanging on the rim, he comes down and one of his feet land on the defenders foot and makes his legs split apart and land awkwardly in the splits position. I also think a power dunk like that isn't only for style points and can play a role in pumping up the crowd and creating a spark and momentum for your team.

I stand by my take. Pulls himself up on the rim, causing his feet to swing out. It was his legs swinging back that made his landing treacherous. I have no problem with a dunker grabbing the rim and hanging there before dropping straight down when players clear. Was Payne’s dunk the most embellished that I’ve seen? Not even close. But if I were a coach it would be a lesson of why you don’t chin up/swing out because bad landings DO happen.
Still hope he’s ok.

Someone on the Maryland board posted that Pharrell was at the Md. women's game yesterday(Sunday). No crutches, braces, wheelchair, etc. He did have a slight limp.
Buzz Williams has come out and said that he never comments publicly on the health of any of his players, at any time. So Buzz is no help for info.
