Wisconsin has been in another universe better than the gophers. Nolan Winter played 9 min per game as a freshman there. Freitag is exactly an example, he could have got major minutes for the gophers but sat on there bench, for one year. Jack Robinson could be another, as he still isn't getting major minutes.

As far as the Portal, they have been getting 1 star like AJ Storr in 23-24, lost him in 24-25, also lost Hepburn, added Tonje that year. I do see now that have quite a few for this season, but really one very good player in Nick Boyd via San Diego st.

I would love if the gophers can get there. Where a system is established, and athletic wings who can score know they have the other pieces to make a very good team if they transfer in.

I don't think Freitag would have gotten major minutes for the Gophers due to the presence of Asuma - but the point is, why do you want him at all? Robison probably doesn't play for the Gophers either. Those two guys aren't P4 high-rotational level players right now, so I don't understand being jealous that someone else has them. And 9 minutes/game for Winter as a freshman is pretty close to being in the rotation vs. being "on the bench" and only getting in for garbage time - because of Payne/Garcia, he might have played even less here. If it were today instead of 3 years ago, maybe Winter would fit better with the Niko regime, but the always-have-a-big-who-shoots-3 thing that Wisconsin has cultivated is hard to ignore if you're a big who shoots 3s.

Regardless, the thesis that you need to establish a system and then players who fit that system will be attracted to it, is sound.

Freitag was more athletic than any guard MN had on its roster last year, including Asuma. Nolan would have been a better offensive bench player than Fox ever was. Robinson may have been over-rated.

By years end, Asuma was the 2nd best guard last year after Patterson. Asuma and Freitag can both play off the ball. They both could have played major minutes. Rigsby got 17 min per game! Frietag got 2 min as a freshmen at Wisconsin because the talent they had at guard were in another league than the gophers had. Draft pick Tonje 20ppg, Blackwell 16ppg, Klesmit, and McGee. I am not sure Patterson would crack that foursome.

Freitag is averaging 15ppg, 3.7 reb, 2.3 ass, 40% on 3's in his first year starting at buffalo. It will shock no one if he plays two years there, then comes back to the big leagues as a major recruit.

When Hepburn transferred (I think unexpectedly), that was a wide-open opportunity for Freitag. I think a lot of Badger fans had him penciled in to take over and he could not do it, nor come even close. And, with Tonje, Klesmit, and McGee leaving, he'd presumably have had an opportunity this year. Badgers weren't going to settle on a project at best to help them this year. He just wasn't good enough to play at the P4-level. I agree he may make his way back after a year or two at a mid-major where he does get PT - that's frankly what a lot of players should do if they're unlikely to get PT at a P4 as a freshman, but I digress...
 

Parker Fox. Simply put, Ben had almost zero room for misses and he bet on broken player. 1st injury? Fine. A second injury? Gonzo.

I don't fault Ben for standing by Parker- I fault him for not recruiting anyone better than him. Parker was easily in our top 8 guys each year, despite all of his limitations. If Fox would have become our 11th option- great.

You score high in Kindness and I respect that but Ben didn’t have currency to screw around with wait and see.
