All Things 2025-26 Minnesota Twins Off-Season Thread

This is about as uninspiring as possible. I have nothing against Shelton, but what must the Twins be thinking making this hire? He's got pretty much the same profile as Baldelli, which doesn't address the team's shortcomings under Baldelli. Usually when a team fires and hires someone, they go with someone who's distinctly different. They just hired Rocco 2.0.

I wanted to pan this hire, but I can't. No one should, either.

Shelton was set up to fail every year by the Pirates. He'll know how to manage the Twins because they're rowing in the same boat as the Pirates.

There isn't a managerial candidate out there who will be able to succeed at a high level with the constraints that will be put on the roster.

In other words, who cares. It won't matter at all until his boss and boss' boss get a clue.
If it's a massive uphill climb anyway, why not hire someone unproven to give them a shot. Rowson or Vazquez probably fail, but at least they'd provide a little bit of intrigue, at least early on. From a PR standpoint, this organization continues to do absolutely everything it can to keep all of the fans they've driven away moving further and further from the club, not closer.

This is about as inspiring as firing Richard Pitino to hire Ben Johnson. At least Shelton has manager experience I guess.

I would have rather they just went with someone that had no previous connections to the organization, regardless if they had previous manager experience or not.

Yeah, but it's not about that. It's about having a guy who's not going to argue when Falvey says on game day, "Look, I just found out that Mickey Gasper is batting .329 during day games when I've had Quisp cereal for breakfast, and I had a big bowl of Quisp this morning, bat him leadoff."

It's more like firing Pitino and bringing back Dan Monson. He won't be totally incompetent like Ben, but it's not really an upgrade.

Wait, can I still get Quisp?

This is ALL I care about right now.

Nice of them to let Jeremy Zoll out of the dungeon. Haven't seen or heard a peep from him in 8 months.
He was at the press conference announcing Rocco's firing. But I'm not sure he was allowed to speak. And we know they can't let Joe Pohlad speak in public as disaster will ensue. Quite an organization.

They desperately need to get the minority owners approved and let them be the public face.

Interesting info from the Twins' MLB beat writer, regarding the 40 man roster moving forward -

Who needs to be added to the 40-man roster, and do they have a crunch for roster spots?
The Twins have 10 top-30 prospects, per MLB Pipeline, who must be added to the 40-man roster or else risk being lost to the Rule 5 Draft: No. 5 prospect Kendry Rojas, No. 8 Gabriel Gonzalez, No. 9 Connor Prielipp, No. 17 C.J. Culpepper, No. 19 Andrew Morris, No. 24 Jose Olivares, No. 25 Hendry Mendez, No. 26 Ricardo Olivar, No. 29 Kala’i Rosario and No. 30 Danny de Andrade.

The 40-man roster currently stands at 39, and that’s where it will be again after Vázquez officially becomes a free agent and Alan Roden is activated off the 60-day injured list.

So, yes, there will be something of a crunch.
Kendry Rojas
How might that be resolved, and when does that need to be set?
Quite a few of those players will certainly be added to the 40-man: names like Rojas, Gonzalez and Prielipp are obvious, and several others will likely be easy calls, as well. Meanwhile there are certainly some players on the 40-man who could be cut loose or simply outrighted – in particular, look at some of the relievers who were added after the Trade Deadline as leading candidates to be trimmed.

The club could also attempt to trade some of those players, as well as some of their non-tender candidates. The deadline for Rule 5 eligibility is Nov. 18.
