4th and 2. Offense set up for a run, called a timeout, didn’t like the defense. Came back out spread the defense, like it was 4th and 20. Ran wildcat up the center for 40 yards against virtually no defense. That’s a coaching error. We’ve become accustomed to decent defensive coaching and so we’re questioning the talent level this year. I think it may be more of a coaching issue.

#9 made a horrendous read and left a gaping hole, granted there was no safety help.

Not saying the coaches don’t have something to do with it, but they are always such an easy target. Maybe part of it is that the players just aren’t that good. Although I guess you can blame the coaches because they’re responsible for getting the talent as well.

Nope. You can blame the coaches for both.
You call a game different based on the talent.

DC is calling a game like a guy who can stop the run by playing man to man with 5 guys not looking at the ball. And the 6 he is doing with aren’t good enough.
He is playing the game on paper instead of on the field.
Theoretically he is making great calls. But the theory is out the window if the guys can execute.

Better to shoot for a B+ and get a B+ than shoot for an A and get a D

I don’t think last years defense was vastly more talented. Yes the cornerbacks were better and we miss Lindenberg, but there’s still a lot of the same players and a lot of experience.

A lot of the same players yes, but 3 guys from last year's D are now in the NFL and 2 more were among the final cuts in training camp... And another got a sniff. So that's 6 of 11 starters who were good enough for NFL teams to take serious notice. That's a ton of talent. I thought the returning players would be better than they've been, but I was always pretty worried about CB, DL, OL, and WR -- positions where there was a ton of turnover.

So what should he be calling? Honest question.

Defense had a LOT of bad plays last night, which had a lot to do with it being close.

Their good plays had a lot to do with us winning.

I believe that play gained more rushing yards for Purdue then we had all night. So that's the first thing. Our defense was awful. Our offense was worse. We did get turnovers, which was Purdue being awful. Purdue could have won easy running the ball the entire second half, but instead they decided to throw. So lots of bad play all around.

Danny Collins is young and new. We can’t afford a real dc. These are the top 2 excuses
I could see Joe Rossi being back on the market this Spring as there are a lot of fingers being pointed at his defense after the loss to UCLA, while also looking bad against NEB & USC in previous weeks. If Smith scapegoats Rossi to keep his job, I could see PJ taking him back if Collins really goes south down the stretch.

Doubt it. PJ is a loyal guy (see our god awful Special Teams guy he kept around forever). And the bigger issue this year isn't scheme. Its lack of talent.

Well, Purdue scored 23 in the first half vs Notre Dame, and 30 overall. They scored 27 against Illinois. They scored 20 vs MN. Plus, the MN D scored the game winning TD.

It’s crazy that over the last few years people worry about the D when the O has been much more of the problem.

Based on how MSU has been doing I think our program and Rossi mutually moved on at the right time

Well I get he is trying to grow the defense. But at the same time, to me two of the top guys on the defense are the two safeties. So he should call stuff where they are both looking at the ball (zone)

If you go man zero or man free at least one and possibly both aren’t looking at the ball.
If you mess up a run fit with the front 7 while these guys are chasing wideouts, that’s an explosive play (see the 4th down touchdown run)

They can’t do the same thing all the time and also need to try to get better. But they should play to the defenses strengths which is putting the two safeties in positions to make plays all over the field rather than putting one or both of them man to man on someone who can just run them out of the play

Yup, our offense is far worse compared to the rest of the B1G.

Yeah, he screwed the pooch big time on that play. Bit on the fake and left the middle wide open.

I feel part of the issue is guys over-pursuing and getting themselves out of position. It feels like communication isn't quite on the same page between the DL and LB.

If they are going to come out that lethargic on defense, take the ball if you win the toss. The defense was not ready until the 3rd quarter.

Yes. Nestor’s pick and Perich’s pick six was the same defensive set. They suck. We suck.

Gophers win. Geezus.

4-2, 2-1. 2 games ahead of presumptive National Champ Penn St. Throw the season away. Bail. Run away.

Good.

Bye.

Don’t need you.

It is really troubling for sure. As a longtime fan I maybe started taking for granted having a solid defense. If this defense even had the two corners from last year I think it would be a really big improvement. This current dback group cannot play zone defense at a level that is even remotely acceptable. This then leads to them being weaker than they could be in run defense. I found it interesting that Purdue with their group of 82 new players had a secondary and I guess front seven that was a few notches better than the Gophers. Apparently our team whiffed on the recruiting classes that would have resulted in juniors and seniors playing now. I think think the coaches under performed in the transfer portal. I think they had done pretty well in the portal in previous years.

We have a serious talent deficit at linebacker. That's tough to overcome.
I think they should play the young fella Karmo, dude is fast and athletic. Will he make mistakes due to being young? Yes. But he will make a lot of plays due to said athleticism and gain needed experience.
