Kicker

Yup. Time to give somebody else a chance. If we can’t count on making some FG’s > 40 yards that could cost us a few close games.

I think the OSU pass on the punt return was a direct result of our punter out-kicking the coverage. It was like Day gave us something to think about going forward. Still, his punts were amazing, and as mentioned in the previous post, the highlight of a dismal evening.

We've had a good run of reliable kickers the past 5-6 years, this has been awful

Our kickers in the 2020 short year weren't reliable. We lost two games in overtime that year because of missed kicks - a field goal against Wisconsin and an extra point against Maryland. Trickett, in his first year (2021), only made 68% of his field goals. He was much better in his second year.

While it’s perhaps a bit like worrying about muddy carpets after the cabin got leveled by a storm, but I am favor of letting the young man from Alexandria giving it a go.
Who kicks a higher % in practice?
I am not at practice, but I know what I see at the games and the current guy doesn't inspire confidence at all. If the guy from Alex isn't getting a shot because they are trying to preserve a redshirt, I think that's short sighted. If he's no better than Denaburg, we're in trouble going forward.

I don't think preserving a redshirt is a factor, especially in this day when you can go get transfers.

If I had to guess, the two of them probably look very similar in practice so they have gone with Denaburg because he has more experience and his kickoffs have been good.

In Denaburg's defense - he is 6-9 on FG and 2 of the 3 misses were from 50+. He has made all of his extra points as well.

I doubt there will be a change at kicker at this point. As long as he can consistently make his kicks under 50 yards (miss against Ohio State was his first of the year) I bet they role with him. If he comes out against Purdue and misses some shorter kicks all bets are off at that point.

Having said that. I 100% would not send him out for a kick over 45 yards at this point. Either try someone else or go for it.

I'd hope saving a year for Jackson isn't a factor, only mentioned it because it's a possibility as to why he's only been in one game so far.

Maybe Denaburg is the best option, but he's a career 61% kicker (19 for 31). You are right that he's 6 of 9 this year, but only one of the makes was over 30 yards. Ligashesky brought him in from Syracuse, so he knows what he is and isn't. Maybe he thought he could fix him? Who knows, but whether it's mental or mechanical, he's proven unreliable at distance. His career long is 46 yards. On kicks longer than 38 yards, he's made just 3 of 12 (including a block). This year on those longer kicks he's 0 for 3.

If Jackson is so much worse in practice that they have decided he's not a viable option, I agree with you that we should just take the long FG out of the tool bag and go for it or return to punting from the plus 35.

Will be interesting to see how it develops. Denaburg had been fine up to the Ohio State game. His make was shaky and the miss wasn't even close in that one.

In college you need a kicker who is close to automatic from 40 yards an in (in the NFL that standard is 50). Beyond that it becomes a bit of a crap shoot. We have been fortunate to have some pretty solid kickers here. Anyone who watches the NFL gets spoiled watching those guys make 50+ or even 60+ yard kicks look easy.

Hopefully Denaburg can be the guy but if he falters I assume they will give someone else a look.

I think more of us would be in favor of trying a new kicker on field goals. The missed kick's put pressure on the offense when they are already struggling to score points.
