If a super league is made up of 32 teams, Minnesota would have a much harder time making its claim. For one, the Gophers have been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for only two weeks since the 2019 season.

One of the biggest rumors buzzing around college football these days is on the potential creation of a “super league” of top programs nationwide.

Yeah I think a 32 team league would be tough. A 48 team they would be in. It seems over the last 5 years or so they’ve hovered between 30-45 overall. A little higher at times and a little lower at times.
 

I think the people who write articles like this are interesting

If there was a 32 team super league the gophers weren’t in I would probably never watch another Bama or Texas game again

Kind of like I don’t watch USFL

I’m not sure leaving out 90 of the 130 programs in the country have nearly as predictable results in future viewership as some think
 

Hard to say. If they were going to take the 32 best programs....Minnesota would likely fall on the wrong side of the bubble. However....money talks. MSP is the 15th largest media market. Do you, as a new league, freeze out one of the largest media markets in the country? Doesn't really make any sense.....and is why I really doubt that a single super conference is coming.

A "super league" would make the pie smaller due to many fans dropping out.

It's just a matter of whether a few programs want to have a smaller pie cut into fewer pieces, leaving potentially larger slices than their sliver of the huge pie.

But anyone who thinks there's massive national demand for a "super league" that will increase the size of the pie is mistaken, I believe.

A super league will get rid of slices but could also reduce the size of the pie

It could also have medium term unintended consequences as schools that currently see 7-5 as bad years go 1-11 and schools that see 9-3 as bad years go 4-8

Yep. For every win there is a loss. A team like Iowa for example ( who I think would be in a 32 team league) would have a lot of 3 win seasons playing that competition all year.

On field success would be a very small part of the equation but only as it relates to viewer interest. The real question will be what schools will get the most viewers.

Some might take that view. But there's a whole lot of fans of schools that would have never made a January 1 bowl game, the BCS or the new CFP that still tune in to watch the helmet schools and blue bloods. There has been and continues to be an unofficial split in CFB. For 60 years, we've been on the wrong side of it.

I think the media market would certainly be a factor but I don't think it would have the same effect if this conversation occurred 20 years ago. If this were 20 years ago, there's no question we'd be in based on market size alone. But I think there's a lot more data now and much more accurate data regarding viewership and its going to be more about what programs attract eyeballs overall, rather than a particular market. If market size were paramount, there's a whole lot of blue bloods that would be left out. Are the Gophers a top 32 brand nationally?

Fans might drop out. It is, after all, minor league football. But the NFL only has 32 teams and it is the entertainment king.
 

A "superleague" would relatively quickly find its way back to having 5-6 perennial top teams, 5-6 perennial bottom dwellers, and 20 some teams in a big middle group that move up and down in that group.
 




There is a reason why the B1G took Rutgers and it wasn’t for the success of their football team. Freezing the 15th largest media market out of any 32 team national sports league would be silly.
 

It’s been reported that If the Big Ten comes to an agreement with a Private Equity firm it would push the grant of rights till 2046, which would kill the Big Ten being a apart of any super league, at least until then.

The twin cities is a pro market. Interest in college sports is secondary and largely followed by alums. O

MSP is a pro market. Interest in college sports is secondary. That's one of the reasons why it's difficult to recruit to mpls.
 



Yes. We would be left out if the 32 teams are allowed to have unlimited money. Essentially a "Pro College League" Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Alabama. Georgia etc.

I would be fine having the Gophers as one of the top schools of the next tier.

Give me a league where it's us, wisconsin, iowa, Nebraska, Iowa state, etc and the "blue bloods" were far removed. I'd be just fine with it.

sure. I will go a step further. Have that be our conference. Have other similar conferences from other parts of the country. The next tier 32 teams. Thats our league.

If we went to a British fútbol system, the Gophers would not be in the Premier league. They would be relegated to the EFL Championship league. But, if the Gophers won the lower league, they would eventually be promoted to the Premier league.

There are more than enough alums in MSP from schools that would for sure be in a super league that this market would still be available with or without the gophers. That and the fact that people in every market like watching blue blood teams play.

The point is that a tv contract for a “super league” would still include the MSP media market with or without the gophers as part of that league.
 

A super league without a draft and some form of control over player contracts to stop the portal will create permanent bottom dwellers. In that type of set up, I would prefer the Gophers not participate at all. If the B1G blows up over that, I would prefer the Gophers and other like teams for a system aligned with the old rules focused on the STUDENT in student-athlete.

Again.....you could say that about any of the largest media markets. They'd all have access to watch the league regardless of whether their team was actually included in the league. But if the main teams in the largest media markets are in a different, competing league.....that's where you run into potential issues with viewership.

If the goal is up front $ then the blue bloods should not entertain the current proposal and look at a deal with a different entity where they are not sharing revenue with the little sisters.

Luckily the school presidents have the power to kill all of these proposals, should they choose to do so.
 

The only way this league would work is if they had promotional and relegation.
