Coaches are hired to be later fired. Most of them also bounce around a lot earlier in their careers. Doctors can start practicing young and continue practicing after normal retirement age. The coaches who actually make the money are evaluated on their records and that isn't completely in their control. Finally, unless they have a history of significant negligence, there is always a place for doctors. Same thing can't be said for coaches.

Being on the practice squad would probably be a good spot to do med school at the U part-time during the season.
 

I think there is a chance he makes the roster. I don't think they will be able to get him to the practice squad because I think another team will pick him up if the Vikings cut him.

I do trust KOC's ability to ID and develop qbs. Guaranteed Darnold has a seismic regression this year

He is my backup if JJ were to go down. Rookie, yes. But, he is basically a mini KOC. I have zero doubt he could run it. Howell looks like dog water and Rypien is alright, but Max has that next level thought process KOC looks for.

You don't need to look. Listen to Jim Harbaugh. People can say what they want about the guy, my only opinion of him is he is an outstanding football coach, judge of talent and specifically a judge of QB talent. Listen to KOC. That's what gives me confidence. I wanted a couple others before JJ. Daniels was my favorite and I like Maye. Caleb to me is a headcase and I wouldn't have touched him. But I have seen what KOC does with QBs and it is really impressive, so I'll default to him on this until he proves otherwise.

I find HCs are always complementary about their QBs.

I have trouble believing Jim makes it clear what QBs will or will not succeed in the NFL ;)

“JJ was great but NFL? Naw….” Seems unlikely.

KOC wasn't a very good NFL QB.

Probably would depend on who would try to sign him in that situation. An argument could be made he has a greater chance of playing by starting on the practice squad with the Vikings than signing somewhere with a more established #1 QB.

Yeah, he did a good job with Kirk, but Kirk was well established by then anyway. No doubt Darnold blew away my expectations but showed his true colors those last couple of games. But if KOC turns JJ into a star I will definitely grant the title.

Agreed. I think both Darnold's and McCarthy's performances this year will be pretty telling as to the extent of KOC's mentoring ability. And defensive coordinators eventually adjust to whatever quirks offensive coordinators identify in defenses based on schemes and what the rulebook allows. Hopefully we're able to finally get that ring before they become too wise to whatever we're doing that helped us win 14 last year with a guy generally considered a total bust!

100%, if he could swing this he could pay for med school out of pocket and still have money left over.

Med school at the U is 11 semesters, so with the current fixed rate for residents the total tuition comes out to $171,545. If Max was on the practice squad for a single year, and was even mildly smart with his money (which I have no doubt he would be), he would make more than enough to cover his entire med school tuition out of pocket.

Now, whether it's manageable time wise to be on the practice squad AND in med school is a whole different story, but still a pretty sweet deal if he could manage it.

I don't know the answer to this, but it really depends on how much time the Vikings practice squad gig takes. Med school requires 6 - 8 hours a day between classroom and studying. Not sure if the U has night time med school, remote med school, etc. Think both require daytime attendance. Maybe he could do 1 semester (spring) each year.

U has a flexible option that allows students to take up to six years to complete. Don't know the specific requirements, but might be an option. THere's been players who have gone to law school while playing. Definitely different but the time commitment is similar.

Well, if JJ ends up being good it will be a long time. If he develops a great QB and has the resume of what he did with Darnold, Kirk being basically at his best with KoC, and getting some wins with Dobbs and the rest...

I think it's warranted to call him a QB whisperer. He was a QB. He was a QB coach. He has a track record so far in his NFL career of getting the most out of the position. Now I'm not one to put it all on the coaches, a lot of what makes QBs work out is the talent and work ethic of the player. There are going to be QBs that no matter how well a coach does their job, they're just not going to be good.

Personally, I think JJ will at the very least be a solid NFL QB.

This is the thing that makes me nervous about JJ McCarthy. He violates my #1 pet rule for QBs...uncommon success on an okay team without all the advantages. For example, I loved Dak Prescott and Russell Wilson coming out of college for those reasons...making Mississippi State and NC State good. I loved Drew Brees back in the day. Then again, I also loved Johnny Football so what do I know.

Penix, who made Indiana and Washington rise to new heights, was my guy in last year's class. I trust KOC as a judge and developer of QB talent and he knows vastly more than I do. But it still concerns me that someone like Max Brosmer could very well have won a natty on that Michigan team.

I hear you but here is the production from the QB position at Michigan was not good before or after JJ McCarthy and the guys before him (Cade McNamara and Shea Patterson) had probably more offensive talent around them. If Nico Collins played with JJ McCarthy, he probably would have been a top 5 pick.

I think it's one thing to be a system a QB and then to put up numbers in a system. It's also one thing to see a place like Ohio State and think everyone has success there and there is so much talent around the QB, but that's not really the case at Michigan before JJ. He was by far the best QB they've had in years (as a 19-20 year old) and he probably had the worst receivers. He had Roman Wilson. He wasn't a product of awesome receivers. Roman Wilson is looking like he's a product of playing with him.

Then again, I'm batting about 50% on predicting if a QB is going to be good, so if you don't know much, I am sure I know less.

Trey Lance is a zero chance (IMO). If they go get a QB, it'll be someone that isn't a development guy, it'll be someone KOC trusts can pick up the playbook and make the right decisions.
