The NFL refs aren't even full time.

Yeah I was wondering about that. Plus it's probably 2-3 days all said and done with travel. Seems weird their air/hotel isn't paid for though if that's the case.
 


They also have other jobs. My work is flexible. I could ref every Saturday no issue. Without using a day of PTO.

Not a bad gig.

I’m quite curious what a Big Ten or SEC ref does for their Monday-Friday 9-5
 

Big time college football. Not a ton of money when you consider what the BIG gets in tv revenue.

Same as NFL refs. Lawyers, superintendents, teachers, sales person, etc.

Both NFL officials I’ve met worked for public schools.

I believe Gene Steratore officiated in the NFL and big ten hoops. Pretty sure he was at The Barn a few days after the Minneapolis Miracle.

I tried to research whether there is additional compensation beyond game day related compensation. For instance, these guys don't just show up to the stadium on Saturdays beginning the end of August. What about training, clinics, etc. I assume these guys are doing some pretty significant prep out of season and during the season. Are they paid for that time? As best as I could find, the answer was "no" and the non-game day, out of season work is fairly substantial with one major college ref describing it as essentially a second job. If so, it's not an awesome rate.

Yeah. I tend to think they’re probably underpaid considering the money involved but overpaid if you ask non football fans

It seems to me that in the old days they would some times talk about that information on the telecasts. "The Side Judge today, Joe Brogan, is a corrections officer for the State of Florida. Wonder how many of these Georgia Bulldogs will be seeing him again someday." Now that it's become a thing (and so much easier) to track down and ruin the lives of everyone you don't like, it seems less common to share that information.
 

People bitch about refs and want to punish them for mistakes.

I don't think people would get what they want if they made that job even LESS desirable.

I'm amazed anyone referees any sport ...
