Settlement Reached

Post this question in the thread in the football forum:

I'd be very curious to hear a statement from Dinkytown Athletes, as to how they are going to structure their NIL deals to Gopher athletes to ensure they pass muster with the new NIL Go clearinghouse.

Shouldn't this be the start to trimming some of the non revenue sports. I just don't get the idea of doing some of the financial games to continue funding programs while going in debt. 20 million or whatever it is gone from your budget is going to be tough to absorb.

I know Coyle has listed the 5 sports the U intends to fund but I don't believe he has announced the percentage to each of those sports. I think he said he wants to fund mens basketball into the top third of the conference but I'm sure he doesn't want to short change Fleck.

What five

Football
Men's and Women's Basketball
Men's and Women's Hockey
Women's Volleyball would be in there I would think.

I believe Women's Hockey is on the outside looking in when it comes to those funds.

That's what it sounded like and is too bad. Women's Hockey has been one of the most, if not the most successful women's sport at Minnesota.

We'll see how this all plays out, but I think this could be one of those unintended ripple effects of completely professionalizing the system.

The truth is that women's hockey likely doesn't "need" the funding because what other programs are actually going to fund it? Who are they competing against? I do wonder about baseball and wrestling. . . will any school fund these?

Maybe at the end of the day the system reverts back into some semblance of normalcy where the non-revenue generating sports are more like "club+" and feel much more like amateur sports and the revenue generating are just that - professional teams.

Has there been anything official released by any of the Title IX offices?

It was always equity, which was why the Badgers got rid of their baseball program (there had to be exact same number of scholarships). If dollars are handed out by the schools, does it have to be equitable? I would have assumed yes. Maybe the Title IX offices were smart enough to give and wink and nod about actually going for equity here because it would kill the goose with golden egg but that would have shown a level of foresight they've never displayed.

I know Texas Tech has announced 1.9% in revenue sharing for baseball, although they mentioned it was lower than people might have expected because their external NIL is quite good.

I suspect a few other schools will contribute small slices also for baseball. However, several schools have announced plans to fully fund 34 baseball scholarships.

I'm guessing not, down the line if say a womans basketball team is earning a much higher piece of total revenue than they recieve in payouts there will be lawsuits.

What happens to the NIL collectives. The more I read it seems the value of the collectives are going to be greatly diminished. Something like 70% of current NIL packages will be disallowed.

Hasten the return of the “Bagman”

Football, mens and women's basketball, men's hockey and volleyball are the five that have been alluded too but no percentage distribution that I've seen
