The Minnesota Vikings recently made a feel-good roster move when they signed former Minnesota Gophers quarterback Max Brosmer shortly after the 2025 NFL Draft.

Brosmer’s Vikings tenure could end up being much more than just a cup of coffee, however.

The Iowa native and former University of New Hampshire star enters an ideal situation with Minnesota, with suspect competition separating him from at least winning the No. 3 job behind starter J.J. McCarthy and veteran backup Sam Howell.

The only player currently standing in the way of Brosmer and Minnesota's 53-man roster is career backup Brett Rypien, who hasn’t taken an NFL snap since 2023 and only has 339 total snaps over his now five-year career in the league.

NFL draft analyst Thor Nystrom recently broke down Minnesota’s 19-player undrafted rookie class for Fantasy Life, and he’s giving Brosmer a “legitimate shot” to make the final roster. Nystrom rated Brosmer as a fringe seventh-round pick and No. 277 overall on his big board.

He's got a great chance to make the Vikings roster and maybe even elevate to the backup role in a year or two.

He'll get good coaching and a system that brings out the best in QBs and won't have tremendous competition in the QB room as it currently stands.
 


Would be awesome if he could earn the #3 spot. Make a ton of money, keep developing, and who knows, maybe things break for him to be a career backup or even a starter at some point down the line.

Backup QB in the NFL is one of the sweetest gigs. You make a lot of money, don't get hit, and have very little pressure on you of any kind until the time comes if/when you actually have to play.

You don't get the glory of being a starting QB in the NFL but for a lot of guys there are far worse ways to spend their 20s and early 30s.

And don't forget that the back-up QB is the fans' answer to the team's woes.

Seriously, Brosmer showed he was able to make the jump up from FCS to FBS by performing well. He's now going to be with a coach that really handles and develops QBs. Brosmer won't become Aaron Rodgers on the field, but people tend to forget that there were a lot of questions about Rodgers' arm strength and his QB training at under Cal Assistant Coach Jeff Tedford (Tedford had worked with a lot of QBs that were first-round picks--Akili Smith, Kyle Boller, Jeff Harrington--but before Rodgers none really had fulfilled their promise). Brosmer is going to get the training (and time) to work up any gaps he has and I think if he's successful, he's going to have a decent career.

The guy is a film room fanatic, so he is a student of the game and if his playing career doesn't materialize, he's got all the earmarks of a great coach. Of course, I don't know if getting on a coaching tree beats out a career in medicine. Great kid. Glad he graced us with a very good season. I hope nothing but the best for him.

Yep, really easy kid to root for and I certainly wouldn't bet against him. Unlikely that he ever becomes a full-time starter in the NFL but I could see him carving out a spot in the NFL and having a long career.

Also seems like the type who could do well in coaching if he wants to go that route whenever he is done playing football. Felt that way about Morgan as well but appears he has elected to go out into the "real world". :)

I find that point about "legitimate shot" click bait. Literally every player who walks into the training facility has a 'legitimate shot.' That goes without saying as every player returning has to prove their worth, even under contract. Whether or not Brosmer is the real deal or not to make the club is nothing but speculative. I give him about a 1:84 shot at making it.

As in making it on a roster? Playing meaningful snaps? I like the odds if it is the former.
 


Cheaper than Rypien, more potential, and probably just as good at holding a clipboard. Would expect him to get a practice spot squad at least and be the third QB on game days.

It wasn't that long ago that Brock Purdy was happy to make the team after being selected as Mr. Irrelevant, and Brosmer reminds me quite a bit of Purdy. He's a smart, capable guy who isn't on the top of anyone's list of starting QBs, but if he gets a chance, he'll do something with it.

Making the roster is the first step, because even for Cam Ward, the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

Todd Collins (16 seasons), Brian Hoyer (12), Ryan Fitzpatrick (15), Josh McCown (14). Nice paychecks without bad injuries.

Ideally, Med School at the U while playing for the Vikes. I don't know if that is possible, plus he must prove himself worthy as a backup QB worth keeping for the long haul. This is his legitimate shot.
 

Biggest issue Brosmer faces is other more veteran QBs being signed into that 3rd spot as the cuts start coming late summer. I have no doubt he can beat our Rypien for the 3rd spot. I have some doubts he can beat out other teams cuts.

He is in a good spot with a stable franchise and a good QB-centric coach. Could see them wanting another longer toothed guy to round out the QB room with JJ and Thurston Howells grandkid.

I think the "legit shot" comes more from a former Gopher angle signing with the Vikings.

I enjoyed Mitch Leidner's career as a Gopher, but at no point did I expect him to make the Vikings roster when he signed. I think a lot of people, myself included, won't be overly shocked if Brosmer is QB#3 for the Vkes.
